3 Days in Amsterdam: A Balanced Canal and Museum Itinerary
A day-by-day route pairing pre-booked museums with unhurried walks along the canals.
This three-day plan groups adjacent neighbourhoods so you spend your time walking beside the canals rather than crisscrossing the city on trams. Before locking in your days, book your timed slots for the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum as explained in our booking guide.
Day 1: The Western Canal Ring, the Nine Streets and the Jordaan
- 08:30: start at Brouwersgracht while the water is mirror-still and the city is waking up. Walk south along Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht into the Jordaan, peeking into the quiet garden of the Karthuizerhofje.
- 10:30: coffee and a slice of warm apple pie at Noordermarkt, then browse the independent shops across the bridges of De Negen Straatjes (the Nine Streets).
- 13:00: lunch by Spui square, followed by a quiet ten-minute detour through the hidden wooden door of the medieval Begijnhof courtyard and past the Royal Palace on Dam Square.
- 15:30: visit the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht (using the slot booked six weeks prior) and climb or view the neighbouring Westerkerk tower.
- 18:00: board a small open-top electric canal boat as the bridge lights come on, then finish with bitterballen in a Jordaan brown café or an Indonesian rijsttafel dinner.
Day 2: Museumplein, De Pijp and Vondelpark
- 09:00: enter the Rijksmuseum at opening time and head straight to Level 2 for Rembrandt's Night Watch and the Vermeers in the Gallery of Honour.
- 12:00: walk ten minutes east into De Pijp to graze along the Albert Cuyp Market (hot fresh stroopwafels, herring and aged Gouda), followed by coffee around Gerard Douplein and a stroll through Sarphatipark.
- 15:00: return to Museumplein for your afternoon timed slot at the Van Gogh Museum (or the Stedelijk Museum if modern design is more your style).
- 17:30: unwind with a walk under the trees of Vondelpark and dinner in Oud-West near De Hallen or back in De Pijp.
Day 3: Historic East, IJ Ferries and Amsterdam Noord
- 09:30: explore the historic eastern edge: the Rembrandt House Museum (Rembrandthuis) on Jodenbreestraat, the 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue and the glass palm houses of the Hortus Botanicus in De Plantage.
- 13:00: walk along the waterfront past the green copper hull of the NEMO Science Museum to the rear of Amsterdam Centraal Station and take the free GVB ferry across the IJ to Buiksloterweg for the EYE Film Museum terrace, or the longer 14-minute ferry to NDSM Wharf for warehouse street art and waterside cafés.
- With a 4th day: take a 15-minute NS train from Centraal to Haarlem, or in April and May head out to the tulip fields and Keukenhof.
