Best Time to Visit Amsterdam

Tulip season in spring, long summer evenings on the water and quiet winter museum days.

Amsterdam sits close to the North Sea, which gives it mild, changeable weather year-round: rarely freezing for long in winter, rarely scorching in summer, and always capable of a quick rain shower followed by bright sunshine twenty minutes later. The two best windows for a first visit are mid-April to mid-June and September.

Spring (April and May) is the most famous season to arrive. The tulip fields between Haarlem and Leiden bloom from late March into early May, peaking around mid-April, when the Keukenhof gardens are at their fullest. On 27 April (or 26 April if the 27th is a Sunday), King's Day (Koningsdag) turns the entire city orange: boat parades jam the Canal Ring, street markets fill every pavement, and normal transport in the centre stops for the day. Book hotels months early if your dates cross King's Day or Easter.

Summer (June to August) brings the longest days, with daylight lasting past 10pm in June. Locals move life outdoors onto canal boats, café pavements in De Pijp and the lawns of Vondelpark. In June, during Open Garden Days (Open Tuinen Dagen), around two dozen private gardens hidden behind grand Herengracht and Keizersgracht townhouses open to the public for one weekend. Early August hosts Pride Amsterdam, famous for its Saturday afternoon boat parade along Prinsengracht.

Autumn and Winter (October to March) are cooler, windier and much quieter after October. October brings the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and golden leaves along the canals. From late November to mid-January, the Amsterdam Light Festival installs illuminated art sculptures along the waterways, best seen from an evening boat or a canalside walk. In rare prolonged sub-zero spells, sections of the canals still freeze, though most winter days are best spent inside the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum before warming up in a brown café.
