Where to Stay in Amsterdam: Best Neighbourhoods Compared

Six Amsterdam neighbourhoods compared by atmosphere, canal views, stairs and transport links.

Choosing the right base in Amsterdam comes down to a simple trade-off: historic canal-house charm in the Jordaan and Canal Ring versus larger rooms, lifts and lower prices a few tram or metro stops further out. Wherever you book, avoid the immediate streets around Damrak, Warmoesstraat and the Red Light District (De Wallen), which stay loud until the early hours.

1. The Jordaan and Nine Streets (Best for first-timers and romance)

Narrow waterways, ivy-draped bridges, independent boutiques and classic brown cafés within walking distance of Anne Frank House and Centraal Station. Keep in mind: boutique hotels in 17th-century townhouses often have compact rooms and steep stairs rather than lifts.

2. Southern and Western Canal Ring (Best for classic canal views)

Stretching along Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht between Raadhuisstraat and Vijzelstraat, this area sits right between the historic core and Museumplein. Quieter at night than Centrum, with handsome double-width merchant mansions converted into refined hotels.

3. De Pijp (Best for food, markets and young energy)

Just south of the Rijksmuseum and connected straight to Centraal Station and Station Zuid via Metro Line 52 (station De Pijp). Stepping out of your hotel puts you next to the Albert Cuyp Market, Sarphatipark and dozens of neighbourhood restaurants and wine bars.

4. Oud-West and Vondelpark (Best for families and mid-range value)

Immediately west of Museumplein and bordering Vondelpark, centred on De Hallen (a former tram depot turned indoor food hall, cinema and craft market). Leafy 19th-century residential streets, easier tram links (lines 1, 3, 7 and 17) and better room sizes for the price.

5. De Plantage and Artis Quarter (Best for a quiet, leafy stay)

East of the centre around the Hortus Botanicus, Artis Royal Zoo and the Resistance Museum. Wide streets, 19th-century architecture and very few stag parties, linked to the centre by tram 14 and the metro at Waterlooplein.

6. Amsterdam Noord and IJ Waterfront (Best for modern hotels and lower rates)

Across the water behind Amsterdam Centraal, reached in five minutes on the free 24-hour GVB ferries or one stop on Metro Line 52. Purpose-built modern hotels with lifts, large windows and sky bars at noticeably lower nightly rates than the historic canals.
