3 Days in Bergen: Bryggen, Two Mountain Summits and a Fjord Excursion

Three days combining UNESCO Bryggen, both mountain railways, white wooden alleys and a fjord cruise.

Because mountain views and fjord cruises are brightest under clear skies while museums and wooden passages shine in any weather, treat Days 2 and 3 of this plan as interchangeable: look at the Yr.no weather forecast on your first evening and assign the sunnier day to your full-day fjord excursion or Mount Ulriken climb. Read our Bergen Card and transport guide before Day 1.

Day 1: UNESCO Bryggen, Bergenhus Fortress, Fish Soup & Mount Fløyen Sunset

  • Morning: beat the crowds into the creaking 1702 wooden passages of Bryggen, then step behind the wharf to visit 12th-century St Mary's Church (Mariakirken), the medieval foundations at Bryggens Museum and the timber assembly halls of Schøtstuene.
  • Midday: continue along the quay to Bergenhus Fortress to tour 1261 Håkon's Hall and climb the spiral stairs of Rosenkrantz Tower.
  • Midday: warm up over a bowl of creamy Bergen fish soup (Bergensk fiskesuppe) inside the glass Mathallen at the Fish Market or at Søstrene Hagelin, followed by a warm skillingsbolle cinnamon roll and coffee.
  • Afternoon: wander the car-free white clapboard smau alleys of Nordnes (Knøsesmauet and Strangehagen) out to Nordnes Park and ride the tiny Beffen ferry back across Vågen harbour.
  • Evening: ride the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen (320m), walk ten minutes through the woods to Lake Skomakerdiket, and walk back down the zig-zag path to the harbour in the evening light before dinner in cobbled Vågsbunnen.

Day 2: KODE Art Museums (Munch), Fantoft Stave Church, Troldhaugen & Mount Ulriken

  • Morning: spend the morning at the lakeside KODE Art Museums admiring the Edvard Munch hall in KODE 3 and the landscapes of Nikolai Astrup and J.C. Dahl.
  • Midday: hop onto Bybanen Light Rail Line 1 from Byparken for 15 minutes to Fantoft stop and walk up through the woods to the dragon-headed Fantoft Stave Church, then ride two more stops to Hop for Edvard Grieg's lakeside villa and composing hut at Troldhaugen.
  • Afternoon: ride back toward town and switch to Bybanen Line 2 (or Bus 5/6) to Haukeland to ascend the Ulriken643 Cable Car to the 643-metre rocky alpine peak of Mount Ulriken.

Day 3: Fjord Excursion (Mostraumen Half-Day, or Sognefjord / Hardangerfjord Full-Day)

  • Half-Day Option (Relaxed Bergen pace): take the in the late morning 3.5-hour Mostraumen Fjord Cruise directly from the Fish Market past Hesjedalsfossen waterfall, then spend a lazy afternoon soaking in the 30°C heated seawater pool and sauna at Nordnes Sjøbad.
  • Full-Day Option: complete the circular Flåm Railway and UNESCO Nærøyfjord cruise or take Bus 925 to walk behind Steinsdalsfossen waterfall on the Hardangerfjord.
