Bergen: What to Know Before You Go

Navigating the Vågen harbour bowl, timing around cruise ships, rain gear and card payments.

Short answer: bring a proper waterproof jacket with a hood even in midsummer, watch the live mountain webcams before buying a ticket up Mount Fløyen or Ulriken, explore Bryggen early in the morning or in the afternoon to beat summer cruise groups, and pay for everything with a contactless card via Norwegian kroner.

How Bergen is laid out around Vågen Harbour

Everything in central Bergen wraps around a compact U-shaped harbour inlet called Vågen. Along the north-eastern shore of the inlet run the UNESCO wooden merchant houses of Bryggen, terminated at the harbour mouth by medieval Bergenhus Fortress and backed up the hillside by the white clapboard lanes of Skuteviken and Sandviken. At the inner head of the harbour sits the Fish Market (Fisketorget), the lower station of the Fløibanen funicular and the medieval lanes of Vågsbunnen. Stretching west along the opposite shore of the harbour is the timber-house peninsula of Nordnes, while directly south of the Fish Market open the wide plaza of Torgallmenningen and the lakeside KODE Art Museums around Lille Lungegårdsvannet.

Beating the cruise ship crowds and checking the sky

Between May and September, large cruise ships dock near Bergenhus Fortress and Bontelabo between roughly early in the morning and in the afternoon. Because Bergen enjoys long northern daylight (lasting past late in the evening in June and July) and the Fløibanen funicular runs late in the evening every night, simply flip your daily rhythm: visit the KODE museums, Fantoft Stave Church or take a fjord boat trip during the middle of the day, and walk Bryggen's silent wooden passages and ride up Mount Fløyen early in the morning or in the golden evening hours.

Cashless payments and Sunday rules

Like the rest of Norway, Bergen is almost completely cashless: buses, Bybanen light rail ticket apps, bakery counters and public toilets take contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay in Norwegian kroner (NOK). Remember that most retail shops and supermarkets close on Sundays, and supermarket beer sales end late in the evening on weekdays and in the early evening on Saturdays.
