Where to Stay in Bergen: Bryggen, Vågsbunnen, Sentrum and Nordnes
Comparing Bergen's four best hotel areas by harbour views, cobbles, luggage convenience and atmosphere.
Because central Bergen is cradled tightly between Vågen harbour, Lake Lille Lungegårdsvannet and the surrounding mountains, almost every hotel in town sits within a ten- to fifteen-minute walk of the Fish Market. Choosing the right side of the harbour comes down to whether you prioritise step-free access from the railway and airport light rail with wheeled luggage, or waking up to wooden gables and fishing boats right outside your window.
1. Bryggen and Vågsbunnen (Best for historic character and harbour views)
Stretching along the eastern shore of Vågen harbour from the wooden rows of Bryggen south into the medieval cobblestone alleys of Vågsbunnen (around Kong Oscars gate, Nedre Korskirkeallmenningen and Vetrlidsallmenningen). Staying here puts you steps from the Fløibanen funicular station, the Mostraumen fjord cruise pier and Bergen's cosiest neighbourhood pubs and coffee shops. Keep in mind: the Flybussen airport coach stops right at Bryggen, whereas walking here from the Byparken light rail stop or the train station takes 8 to 10 minutes across stone squares.
2. Sentrum: Torgallmenningen, Byparken and Ole Bulls plass (Best all-round base)
The flat, monumental heart of downtown rebuilt in Neo-Renaissance and Art Deco stone after the 1916 city fire. Staying around pedestrian Torgallmenningen, Ole Bulls plass or Byparken gives you the smoothest logistics in Bergen: the Bybanen airport light rail terminates right at Byparken, the mainline railway station is five minutes away on flat pavements, the KODE Art Museums sit outside your door, and the Fish Market and Bryggen are a five-minute walk north.
3. Strandkaien and Nordnes Peninsula (Best for views OF Bryggen and quiet wooden streets)
Running along the western shore of Vågen harbour directly opposite Bryggen and extending out onto the white clapboard peninsula of Nordnes. Here is a classic local secret: if you stay *on* Bryggen, you look across at Strandkaien; if you stay along Strandkaien or C. Sundts gate, your harbour-facing hotel window looks directly across the water at the colourful wooden gables of Bryggen and Mount Fløyen rising behind them, and you are right beside Strandkaiterminalen for morning express boats to Flåm and Sognefjord.
4. Nygårdshøyden and Near the Railway Station (Best for budget and early trains)
Around Nonneseter / Bergen Stasjon and up the university hill of Nygårdshøyden (above the lush Nygårdsparken). Ideal if you are catching the early in the morning train toward Flåm and Oslo or looking for clean, modern budget-friendly design hotels.
