Vesterbro, the Meatpacking District (Kødbyen) and Sønder Boulevard
White-tiled butcher halls turned seafood bars in Kødbyen, leafy Sønder Boulevard and independent Vesterbro.
Beginning immediately behind København H Central Station and Tivoli Gardens, Vesterbro grew in the late 19th century as a working-class tenement and industrial butcher district outside the old Western Gate (Vesterport). Over the past two decades it has evolved into one of the most dynamic dining, coffee and design neighbourhoods in Scandinavia, anchored by its functionalist Meatpacking District and a wide, tree-lined central boulevard.
Kødbyen (The Meatpacking District)
Occupying a vast triangle between Halmtorvet and Ingerslevsgade, Kødbyen is divided by the colour of its historic architecture into the older 1880s Brown Meatpacking District (Den Brune Kødby) and the functionalist 1930s White Meatpacking District (Den Hvide Kødby). Listed as a national industrial heritage site, the white-tiled slaughterhouse halls and loading bays still house working wholesale food businesses early in the morning while transforming by midday and evening into a cluster of stripped-back seafood bars, sourdough pizzerias, natural wine cellars, craft microbreweries and contemporary art galleries. On sunny weekends between spring and autumn, the central courtyards host food and design markets with long communal benches.
Istedgade, Værnedamsvej and Sønder Boulevard
Running parallel through the heart of Vesterbro are three distinct streets worth walking end to end:
- Istedgade and Skydebanehaven: once famous for its gritty neon past, Istedgade is now lined with independent Danish ceramic studios, coffee roasters and record shops. Halfway along, step through the brick castle-like façade of Skydebanemuren (built in 1887 to shield the street from a royal shooting range) into a peaceful neighbourhood park and playground.
- Sønder Boulevard and Folkehuset Absalon: a wide, grassy pedestrian and cycle parkway where locals play table tennis and drink filter coffee in the sun. At No. 73 stands Absalon, a colourful former church converted by the founder of Flying Tiger into a lively community living room hosting shared evening dinners (fællesspisning), backgammon and yoga.
- Værnedamsvej (on the Frederiksberg border): at the western end of Vesterbrogade, this short, lively street shared with Frederiksberg is packed with cheese shops, wine bars, florists and French-style cafés, making Vesterbro one of our top choices in where to stay in Copenhagen.
