Where to Stay in Copenhagen: Best Areas Compared

Comparing Copenhagen's six best hotel neighbourhoods by atmosphere, Metro links and walkability.

Copenhagen is safe, well lit and easy to cross in fifteen minutes by Metro or bike, so where you choose to stay comes down to atmosphere and transport convenience. Hotel rooms in 17th- and 18th-century buildings in the historic core tend to be compact, whereas converted warehouses along the harbour or modern properties near the stations offer more space. Compare the six best bases below.

1. Indre By: Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn and the Latin Quarter (Best for first-timers)

Staying inside the historic core between Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, Gammel Strand and the Latin Quarter means you can walk to Rosenborg Castle, Christiansborg, Amalienborg and the Round Tower in ten minutes, and reach the airport in 13 minutes without changing trains on Metro Line M2. Choose a quiet side street around Sankt Peders Stræde, Bredgade or Hauser Plads rather than directly on noisy late-night Vestergade or Gothersgade.

Stretching west from København H Central Station and Tivoli Gardens around Halmtorvet, Istedgade and Enghave Plads, Vesterbro puts you steps from the airport train, the M3/M4 Metro lines and the restaurants of Kødbyen (the Meatpacking District). The streets directly adjacent to Central Station have a lively urban edge, while the blocks further west toward Værnedamsvej and Carlsberg Byen are calm and full of neighbourhood cafés.

3. Christianshavn and Holmen (Best for peaceful canals and water views)

Just across the pedestrian Inderhavnsbroen bridge from Nyhavn or one stop on the M1/M2 Metro. Christianshavn feels like a village of cobbled quays, boats and historic timber warehouses with very little through-traffic.

4. Nørrebro and the Lakes (Best for bakeries, coffee and young energy)

North-west across Dronning Louises Bro around Sankt Hans Torv and Jægersborggade. Traditional hotels are fewer here, but apartment stays and boutique guesthouses put you right in the middle of Copenhagen's best sourdough bakeries, natural wine bars and Assistens Park.

5. Østerbro and Nordhavn (Best for families, parks and modern harbour architecture)

North of the lakes and Kastellet around Trianglen (beside massive Fælledparken) and the transformed silo waterfront of Nordhavn (connected to the centre in five minutes on Metro Line M4). Wide pavements, rooftop bathing zones at Sandkaj and relaxed family bistros.

6. Islands Brygge and Kalvebod Brygge (Best for summer harbour swimming)

Along the southern harbour channel near the Islands Brygge Harbour Bath; modern waterfront hotels with direct access to wooden swimming decks and cycle bridges.
