Best Time to Visit Corfu: Orthodox Easter, Lush May/June Greens and Warm Septembers

Timing your trip for Corfu's emerald spring landscapes, warm September seas or the famous pot-throwing Easter festival.

Lying at the northern end of the Ionian Sea, Corfu has a greener, slightly milder Mediterranean climate than southern Crete or Rhodes: refreshing winter rains feed its four million olive trees, while summer brings long, sunny days averaging 28°C to 32°C. For warm swimming, calm seas for boat trips to Paxos, and comfortable sightseeing in the Old Town, the two ideal windows are mid-May to late June and September to early October.

Spring & Corfu's World-Famous Orthodox Easter (April, May and June) is extraordinary. Throughout Greece, Orthodox Easter in Corfu is legendary: on Holy Saturday morning in the late morning, tens of thousands of people gather in the Old Town for the Botides custom, when residents hurl giant, water-filled red terracotta clay jugs from fourth-floor Venetian balconies to shatter on the cobblestones below (symbolising the noisy victory of life over death), accompanied by eighteen philharmonic brass bands marching in plumed helmets behind the reliquary of St Spyridon. By May and June, wildflowers and fireflies fill the olive groves, daytime temperatures reach 25°C to 29°C, and the east-coast bays are warm for swimming.

High Summer (July and August) brings hot, cloudless days (31°C to 34°C) and the liveliest beach and boat-cruise season. Because Corfu is so lush and green, August afternoons can feel slightly more humid than in the dry Cyclades, making a dip in the refreshing, cool waters of Paleokastritsa or Porto Timoni heaven.

Early Autumn (September and Early October) is many regulars' favourite month: the sea holds all its summer warmth (24°C to 25°C, even on the west coast), afternoon highs sit at a comfortable 26°C to 28°C, and securing a front-row table on the Liston or a boat to Paxos is effortless. By late October and November, autumn showers return to keep the island emerald green. Check what to wear in Corfu before packing.
