Porto Timoni Twin Beach, Afionas Village and Agios Georgios Pagon
Hiking 25 minutes down from whitewashed Afionas village to the twin back-to-back turquoise coves of Porto Timoni.
Twelve kilometres north of Paleokastritsa along the north-western coast of Corfu, a narrow, olive-and-maquis-covered headland juts out into the Ionian Sea like a miniature island connected to the cliffside village of Afionas by a natural double-sided pebble sandspit: Porto Timoni ('The Twin Beach'). Standing on the rocky ridge above and looking down at two mirror-image turquoise bays curving away back-to-back on your left and right is one of the most landmark sights in the Ionian Islands.
Way 1: Parking in Afionas Village & Hiking the 25-Minute Trail (For the Famous Viewpoint)
Drive (or take Green Bus A6/A7) to the picturesque hilltop village of Afionas (34 km north-west of Corfu Town). Park at one of the paid village parking lots at the entrance to Afionas and walk through its flower-filled lanes to the trailhead right beside the sunset terrace of Anemos / Dionysos tavernas:
- The Footpath (1 km, 25 to 30 Minutes Down / 35 Minutes Back Up): the path is a narrow, rocky Mediterranean goat-track winding down through wild macchia scrub (wear closed-toe trainers with real grip, never flip-flops., and carry 1.5 litres of water and snacks, as there are zero cafés, zero toilets and zero natural shade on the beaches below.).
- The Two Bays at the Bottom: after 15 minutes you pass the famous panoramic viewpoint ledge; ten minutes later you step out onto the isthmus. The left-hand bay (Limni) faces the open sea with deeper, cooler sapphire water; the right-hand bay (Porto Timoni) faces the sheltered bay of Agios Georgios with warmer, shallower emerald water ideal for snorkelling.
Way 2: The Easy Zero-Hike Boat Taxi from Agios Georgios Pagon (Or Arillas)
If you want to swim at Porto Timoni without hiking up and down the steep rocky path in the midday heat (or if you want to hike down for the viewpoint photo and take a boat back), drive down to the wide, 3-kilometre sandy horseshoe bay of Agios Georgios Pagon immediately south of the headland. From the northern end of Agios Georgios beach (and from neighboring Arillas Beach to the north), small water-taxi boats and pedalos shuttle visitors straight onto the right-hand beach of Porto Timoni in 10 minutes.
