Pine-covered mountain ridges and highland plateau views above Denizli in southwestern Turkey

Bağbaşı Cable Car (Denizli Teleferik) and Highland Yayla

Riding the 1,500-metre cable car from southern Denizli up to a cool pine-forested plateau at 1,400 metres.

Look south from almost any street in central Denizli and a steep wall of limestone and dark pine forest rises abruptly behind the apartment blocks. When summer afternoon temperatures on the Lycus Valley floor climb past 36°C, locals do not drive to the coast; instead, they hop on a city bus to the southern edge of town and ride the Denizli Teleferik (Bağbaşı Cable Car) straight up the mountain face to the cool, pine-scented plateau of Bağbaşı Yaylası at 1,400 metres elevation.

How the cable car and shuttle work

Opened in 2015 by Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, the eight-person gondola lift spans 1,500 metres in length and climbs roughly 700 vertical metres over rocky ravines and red-pine woods in about six to seven minutes, offering a dramatic bird's-eye panorama back across the entire urban sprawl of Denizli and the white scar of Pamukkale in the distance. When you step off at the upper mountain station (where there is an immediate viewing café terrace), free municipal minibus shuttles wait outside the turnstiles to drive you the remaining 1.5 km along a forested ridge road into the heart of the Bağbaşı Yaylası plateau complex.

What to do at Bağbaşı Yaylası (and staying overnight)

Because the plateau sits more than a thousand metres higher than the valley floor, the air up here is consistently 8°C to 10°C cooler than downtown Denizli in summer, and frequently blanketed in crisp white snow in January and February:

  • Highland walks and Yörük tent pastries: paved and dirt forest trails wind between tall black pines, picnic groves, a rope adventure park and traditional black goat-hair nomad tents (Yörük çadırı) where women roll fresh gözleme (flatbread stuffed with village cheese, spinach or potato) over convex iron griddles and pour glasses of smoky wood-fired tea and frothy ayran.
  • Restaurants and grill houses: municipal highland restaurants serve grilled meats, meatballs (köfte) and full Turkish village breakfasts (serpme kahvaltı) at very reasonable municipal prices.
  • Sleeping in the wooden highland bungalows: thirty cedar-and-pine chalet bungalows sit among the trees on the plateau, available for overnight booking (half-board with breakfast and dinner included) through the official municipal facility website (denizliteleferik.com.tr). In summer and on snowy winter weekends they book out days ahead; see where to stay in Denizli.

How to reach the Teleferik base station

From Delikliçınar Square or the Denizli Otogar, take municipal city bus lines heading toward Bağbaşı / Teleferik (or a 15-minute taxi to the base station on the Antalya highway side of town). Before going on a windy day, check the official Denizli Teleferik page to confirm the gondolas are running.
