Best Time to Visit the Grand Canyon: Spring & Fall Hiking Weather, Summer Monsoons & Winter Snow

Why April/May and September/October are the golden months for hiking below the rim without 40°C inner-canyon heat or summer crowds.

Because the South Rim sits at 2,134 metres (7,000 feet) elevation while the inner canyon floor sits 1,500 metres lower at 730 metres (2,400 feet), the Grand Canyon has two completely different climates at the exact same time: the rim has a four-season mountain-forest climate (complete with winter snow!), while the bottom of the gorge has a hot Sonoran desert climate on par with Phoenix and Death Valley!

The two ideal windows for hiking below the rim are mid-April to late May and mid-September to late October, when rim highs sit at 18°C to 24°C.

1. The #1 Golden Seasons: Spring (Mid-April to May) & Autumn (September to October)

If you want to hike down to Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge or the 1.5-Mile Resthouse in comfortable sunshine without extreme inner-canyon heat or long summer entrance queues, aim for April–May or September–October:

  • Why September & October Are #1 Overall: afternoon temperatures on the South Rim sit at a crisp, sunny 18°C to 24°C (65°F–75°F) with cool 5°C–10°C nights, summer school crowds have gone home, all four free shuttle-bus routes are running, and both the South Rim and the North Rim are open (the North Rim mainly for day use in 2026).
  • April & May: desert wildflowers bloom inside the canyon, days are long and dry (virtually zero rain in May and June!), and daytime rim highs climb from 16°C in April to 21°C in May.

From mid-July through August, afternoon 'Arizona Monsoon' thunderstorms build dramatic clouds, lightning and double rainbows over the chasm!

2. High Summer (June, July & August) & The 'Arizona Monsoon'

Summer brings the longest days and liveliest family atmosphere, with very comfortable 27°C to 29°C (80°F–84°F) afternoons up on the 7,000-foot South Rim—though down inside the canyon, temperatures exceed 41°C (106°F), so do all below-the-rim walks between 06:00 and 09:30 AM! In July and August, mornings are crystal clear while late afternoons often bring brief, dramatic monsoon thunderstorms that create incredible rainbows and cloud inversions!

3. Winter Wonderland on the South Rim (November to March — Open 365 Days!)

Unlike the North Rim, the South Rim is open 365 days a year! In winter (daytime highs 5°C to 10°C, nights -7°C), hotel rates are usually lower, you can drive your own car out along Hermit Road (Dec–Feb), and seeing white winter snow dusted across the fiery red sandstone cliffs is breathtaking! Check what to wear at the Grand Canyon.
