Hiking the Bright Angel Trail: Rock Tunnels, 1,000-Year-Old Pictographs & Safety Rules
Stepping off the Village rim onto the historic Bright Angel Trail—through two hand-carved rock tunnels and beneath 1,000-year-old pictographs.
Starting right in the heart of Grand Canyon Village just west of Bright Angel Lodge and Kolb Studio, the Bright Angel Trail is the historic 'highway' of the Grand Canyon. Following a natural geological fault line used for thousands of years by the Havasupai People (who farmed the spring-watered oasis halfway down now officially restored to its rightful name, Havasupai Gardens!), the trail is more shaded, less exposed, and the only inner-canyon trail with seasonal drinking-water stations and shade ramadas.

1. The Best Short & Half-Day Turnaround Points on Bright Angel Trail
You do NOT have to hike for 6 hours to enjoy the Bright Angel Trail—here are the four natural milestones going down:
- First Tunnel & The Hidden 1,000-Year-Old Pictographs! (0.6 km Round-Trip | 20–30 Minutes — Anyone Can Do It!): walk just 10 minutes down from the rim to pass through the First Rock Tunnel. Immediately after exiting the tunnel, stop, turn around and look up high on the cream limestone cliff overhang to your right (west): preserved in a dry rock niche just above the trail are vivid red-ochre prehistoric Native American pictographs of bighorn sheep and human figures painted over a thousand years ago!
- Second Tunnel / Coconino Overlook (2.9 km / 1.8 Miles Round-Trip | 180m Drop | 1.5 Hours): pass through a second rock arch cut through the cross-bedded 275-million-year-old Coconino Sandstone dunes!
- 1.5-Mile Resthouse (4.8 km / 3.0 Miles Round-Trip | 345m / 1,130 ft Drop | 2 to 3 Hours): features a stone shade shelter, emergency phone, toilets and seasonal drinking water (May–Sept).
- 3-Mile Resthouse (9.6 km / 6.0 Miles Round-Trip | 645m / 2,120 ft Drop | 4 to 5 Hours) & Havasupai Gardens (14.5 km / 9 Miles Round-Trip): serious day hikes descending through the towering 150-metre vertical red wall of the Redwall Limestone via Jacob's Ladder!

2. The 3 Golden Safety Rules for Hiking Below the Rim
- Rule 1 — Allow Twice as Long to Hike Back UP as It Took to Walk Down! If you walk down for 1 hour, budget 2 full hours for the uphill climb back to the rim!
- Rule 2 — In Summer (May to September), Do Not Hike Between 10:00 AM and 16:00 PM: start at 06:00–07:00 AM while the upper Bright Angel cliff is still in cool morning shade!
- Rule 3 — Salty Snacks Are as Important as Water: drinking gallons of plain water in dry desert heat without eating salty snacks (pretzels, trail mix, electrolyte packets) causes dangerous hyponatremia (low blood sodium)!
