Getting Around the South Rim: The 4 Free Colour-Coded Shuttle Bus Routes & Parking

How to park your car once at the Visitor Center and use the 4 colour-coded FREE shuttle bus lines to reach every trailhead and sunset overlook.

Here is the #1 rule for a stress-free day inside Grand Canyon National Park: once you park your car in the morning at the Visitor Center (Lots 1–4) or Market Plaza (Lot A/B), DO NOT try to move your car from viewpoint to viewpoint in the middle of the day! Two of the park's best roads (Hermit Road and Yaki Point Road) are completely closed to private cars anyway, and the National Park Service operates a world-class fleet of 100% FREE, clean-burning natural-gas Shuttle Buses that run every 10 to 15 minutes!

Covered transit shelters and colour-coded route maps at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center Shuttle Bus Terminal near Mather Point
Located a 3-minute walk from Mather Point, the Grand Canyon Visitor Center Plaza is the main transfer hub between the Orange (Rim/Kaibab), Blue (Village) and Purple (Tusayan) shuttle lines.

1. The 4 Colour-Coded Free Shuttle Bus Routes Explained

  1. The ORANGE Route (Kaibab Rim Route — Runs Year-Round, 60 Mins Before Sunrise to 60 Mins After Sunset): departs from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and loops east and west to 5 stops: the South Kaibab Trailhead, Yaki Point (both car-free!), Pipe Creek Vista, Mather Point and the Yavapai Geology Museum!
  2. The BLUE Route (Village Route — Runs Year-Round): connects the Visitor Center with Market Plaza (Yavapai Lodge & General Store/Deli), the Backcountry Information Center, Maswik Lodge, Bright Angel Lodge, El Tovar and the transfer stop for the Red Route!
  3. The RED Route (Hermits Rest Route — Runs March 1 to November 30): departs from the transfer stop just west of Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon Village and runs 11 kilometres west along car-free Hermit Road to all 9 sunset overlooks (Powell, Hopi, Mohave, Pima and Hermits Rest)!
  4. The PURPLE Route (Tusayan Park & Ride Route — Runs Spring to Early Autumn): arriving at the park after 10:00 AM in July when Visitor Center parking is full? Park your car for free in the town of Tusayan (at the IMAX Theater / hotels just 2 miles outside the South Gate!), buy/show your park pass, and ride the Purple Shuttle Bus straight past the entrance gate traffic line directly to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center in 20 minutes!
Cyclists riding rented e-bikes along the paved car-free Greenway Trail through the ponderosa-pine forest on the South Rim
Right next to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Bright Angel Bicycles rents regular bikes and pedal-assist e-bikes that are allowed on both the Greenway paths and car-free Hermit Road!

2. Secret Alternative: Rent an E-Bike Right at the Visitor Center!

Right beside the Visitor Center shuttle terminal sits Bright Angel Bicycles & Café: you can rent a regular commuter bike or a pedal-assist E-Bike to ride the paved, car-free Greenway Trail and Hermit Road at your own pace without waiting for a single shuttle bus!

Spacious free parking lots at Market Plaza (Lot B) beside the Canyon Village Market and Yavapai Lodge
If Lots 1–4 at the Visitor Center fill up around 10:30 AM, drive 2 minutes west to the huge overflow lots at Market Plaza (Lots A & B) and hop on the Blue Shuttle.
