Getting to the Grand Canyon South Rim from Las Vegas (4.2h), Phoenix (3.5h) & Flagstaff

Comparing the drive from Las Vegas (via Hoover Dam and Route 66) versus Phoenix (via Sedona) to the South Rim.

Because the Grand Canyon South Rim sits in the high plains of northern Arizona, most visitors arrive as part of a Southwest road trip from either Las Vegas, Nevada (445 km / 4 hours 15 minutes west) or Phoenix, Arizona (370 km / 3.5 hours south).

Driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon South Rim takes you directly across the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge 40 minutes outside Vegas.

1. Driving from Las Vegas to the South Rim (445 km / 277 Miles — 4 Hours 15 Minutes)

Take I-11 / US-93 South across the Colorado River at Hoover Dam into Arizona, then turn east onto Interstate 40 East to Exit 165 (Williams) and follow Arizona State Route 64 North for 95 km straight to the South Entrance Gate! Turn the 4-hour drive into an iconic Americana road trip with three quick stops:

  1. Stop 1 — Hoover Dam & Memorial Bridge Walkway (40 Mins from the Vegas Strip): park free at the Memorial Bridge plaza to walk out 270 metres above the Colorado River looking straight down onto the 1935 Art Deco arch of Hoover Dam!
  2. Stop 2 — Historic Route 66 Through Seligman (Or Hackberry General Store): at Kingman or Ash Fork, hop off I-40 for 20 minutes to drive a vintage stretch of Historic Route 66 through Seligman, Arizona (the real-life inspiration for Pixar's Cars / Radiator Springs, where 1950s convertibles line Delgadillo's Snow Cap Drive-In!).
  3. Stop 3 — Williams, Arizona: grab lunch on Route 66 one hour before reaching the Canyon!

Built in 1953 by Juan Delgadillo out of scrap lumber, Delgadillo's Snow Cap in Seligman is the most famous roadside stop on Historic Route 66 between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

2. Driving from Phoenix (PHX) or Flagstaff (FLG) — Plus Avoiding the South Gate Queue!

  • From Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX — 370 km / 3.5 Hours North): follow Interstate 17 North from the Sonoran Desert saguaro cacti up 1,800 vertical metres into the cool ponderosa pines of Flagstaff (detouring 45 minutes through red-rock Sedona & Oak Creek Canyon along the way!).
  • Insider Gate Secret — Use the 'East Entrance at Desert View' on Busy Summer Weekends! Between 10:00 AM and 14:00 PM in summer, the main South Entrance Gate near Tusayan can have a 45-to-60-minute car line. If you are coming from Flagstaff or Phoenix, instead of taking I-40 West to Williams, take US-89 North from Flagstaff to Cameron (stopping at historic 1916 Cameron Trading Post for a Navajo Taco!) and turn west onto Highway 64 into the Desert View East Entrance—where there is almost zero wait and you see all of Desert View Drive on your way in! (Without a car? Groome Transportation runs daily shuttle vans from Flagstaff Amtrak/Airport right to Maswik Lodge in Grand Canyon Village!).

Have your payment card or America the Beautiful annual pass ready as you approach the entrance station; since 2026 visitors who are not U.S. residents pay an extra $100 per person aged 16 and over unless they hold an annual pass.
