Bucket-List Adventures: South Rim Helicopter Flights, Smooth-Water Rafting & Mule Rides
Flying out over the 1,500-metre drop of the Dragon Corridor by helicopter, floating through Horseshoe Bend on a raft, or riding a mule.
Beyond walking the trails, three signature excursions let you experience the Grand Canyon from completely different angles: soaring across the chasm in a glass-cockpit helicopter, floating on the emerald Colorado River at the bottom of 600-metre sandstone walls, or riding a sure-footed mule along the rim.

1. Helicopter Tours: South Rim (Tusayan) vs Las Vegas Flights (Crucial Difference!)
Before booking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour, understand a major geographic rule: commercial sightseeing helicopters are legally prohibited from landing at the bottom of the canyon inside Grand Canyon National Park! Therefore, you choose between two very different flight hubs:
- Option A — Departing from the South Rim in Tusayan, AZ (25–30 Mins or 45–50 Mins): operated by Papillon and Maverick Helicopters right from Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) in Tusayan (10 minutes south of Grand Canyon Village!). If you want to fly over the deepest, widest, most dramatic section of the real National Park—the 'Dragon Corridor'—between the South Rim and the North Rim, book from Tusayan! For seven minutes you fly low over the green ponderosa-pine forest of the Kaibab Plateau, and then—whoosh!—the earth suddenly vanishes 1,500 metres straight down beneath your helicopter skids to the Colorado River!
- Option B — Departing from Las Vegas, NV (Flies to Grand Canyon West, NOT the South Rim!): helicopter tours departing the Las Vegas Strip fly over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead to Grand Canyon West (Hualapai Tribal Land)—where they ARE permitted to descend 1,200 metres and land on the canyon floor beside the Colorado River for a champagne picnic!

2. Colorado River Rafting (Half-Day Smooth-Water Float at Page!) & Canyon Mule Rides
- Half-Day Smooth-Water Rafting Through Horseshoe Bend (No Whitewater, Ages 4+!): multi-day whitewater rafting through the inner Grand Canyon takes 3 to 14 days; however, just 2 hours north-east at Page (Glen Canyon Dam), you can take a half-day motorized pontoon-raft float trip down 15.5 miles of mirror-calm emerald water—passing ancient petroglyphs and floating right around the base of Horseshoe Bend to Lees Ferry (where Grand Canyon whitewater expeditions begin)!
- South Rim Mule Rides (Book 6–13 Months Ahead via Xanterra!): choose between the 2-Hour Canyon Vistas Rim Ride (along a paved/dirt path on the East Rim—much easier to book!) The overnight mule ride to Phantom Ranch is not running: Phantom Ranch and the inner-canyon trails below it have been closed since the August 2026 flash floods, with no reopening date.
