Getting Around Izmir: İzmirim Kart, Contactless Tap, Ferries and Trams
How to combine seafront trams, the Metro and 15-minute İzdeniz bay ferries with a contactless card.
Izmir's municipal transport network is one of the most pleasant in the Mediterranean because two of its main workhorses, the İzdeniz passenger ferries across the bay and the grass-tracked Konak and Karşıyaka Trams, run entirely in the open air right along the Aegean shoreline. All five modes (Metro, İZBAN suburban rail, Trams, İzdeniz Ferries and ESHOT Buses) are fully integrated under a single payment system.
How to Pay: Contactless Bank Card vs İzmirim Kart
- Option 1: Tap Your Own Contactless Visa or Mastercard (Simplest for short stays): every turnstile at İzdeniz ferry piers, Metro stations, İZBAN platforms, Trams and ESHOT buses accepts contactless foreign Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay directly. You simply tap the reader and walk through, paying the standard single-ride contactless tariff (note: one card per passenger, and contactless bank cards do not include the 120-minute discounted transfer window).
- Option 2: Buy a Physical "İzmirim Kart" (Best for 3+ days or transfers): pick up a rechargeable plastic İzmirim Kart at the yellow Biletmatik machines at the airport, Metro or ferry piers and top it up with lira notes or a card. Using an İzmirim Kart gives you free or heavily discounted transfers for 120 minutes after your first tap when switching between the Metro, Ferry, Tram and Bus, and one card can be tapped multiple times to let 2 or 3 companions through on the flat-fare Metro, Tram and Ferry.
- Important İZBAN "Tap-In AND Tap-Out" Rule: unlike the flat-fare Metro, Tram and Ferry (where you only tap once when entering), the 136-kilometre İZBAN suburban train line uses distance-based pricing (Artı Para). When boarding İZBAN, the turnstile blocks the maximum end-of-line fare on your card; when you exit your destination station, always tap your card on the silver "İade / Refund" pillar by the exit gate to get the unused distance refunded instantly.
Three Scenic Lines You Will Use Every Day
- Konak Tram (T2, Fahrettin Altay to Halkapınar): glides along the southern shore past the Historical Asansör (Karataş stop), Konak Pier, Cumhuriyet Meydanı, Alsancak Gar and Kültürpark.
- İzdeniz Bay Ferries: sail every 15 to 20 minutes from Konak, Pasaport and Alsancak across to Karşıyaka and Bostanlı (plus summer weekend beach ferries to Urla, Mordoğan and Foça).
- Bisim (Waterfront Bike Share): blue rental bicycles stationed at every ferry pier along the 40-kilometre continuous flat cycle track Encircling the entire Gulf of Izmir.
