Where to Stay in Izmir: Alsancak, Konak, Karşıyaka and the Peninsula Compared

Choosing between seafront hotels on the Kordon in Alsancak, historic Konak, or stone villas in Urla and Alaçatı.

Choosing where to base yourself in Izmir depends on how you split your days between the urban waterfront, ancient archaeological sites (Ephesus and Pergamon) and the beaches and vineyards of the western peninsula. Compare the five best bases below.

1. Alsancak, Pasaport and Cumhuriyet Meydanı (Best All-Round Base for First-Timers)

Stretching from Pasaport Ferry Pier and Cumhuriyet Meydanı north along the Kordon promenade to Alsancak Train Station. This is by far the most popular and convenient place to sleep in central Izmir: you step out of your hotel directly onto the seafront lawns and the Konak Tram, you have dozens of Aegean fish taverns, bakeries (including Dostlar Fırını for morning boyoz) and wine bars within five minutes' walk in the historic stone alleys of Kıbrıs Şehitleri, and Alsancak İZBAN Station links you straight to the airport in 28 minutes and north toward Pergamon. For quiet rooms with panoramic sunset views over the bay, book along Cumhuriyet Bulvarı between Pasaport and Gündoğdu Square; for boutique townhouse character, look in the calm streets around Kültürpark and the French Cultural Centre.

2. Konak and Çankaya (Best for Kemeraltı Bazaar, Budget Value and Metro Access)

Immediately south of Pasaport around Konak Pier, Gazi Bulvarı and Çankaya Metro Station. Staying here puts you a five-minute walk from the 1901 Clock Tower, the coffee courtyards of Kemeraltı Bazaar, the Ancient Agora of Smyrna and Basmane Train Station (for early-morning direct trains to Selçuk/Ephesus and Pamukkale). Stick to hotels facing the seafront boulevard or main tram avenues rather than the dimly lit backstreets uphill behind Basmane at night.

3. Karşıyaka and Bostanlı (Best for a Relaxed Local Residential Stay)

Across the bay on the northern shore around Karşıyaka Pier and Bostanlı. Fewer international chain hotels, but lovely apartment stays and waterfront guesthouses connected to Konak and Alsancak in 15 minutes by frequent ferries.

4. Urla and İskele (Best for Vineyards, Olive Groves and Gastronomy)

Thirty-five minutes west of Izmir by car; peaceful stone vineyard hotels and restored mansion guesthouses along the Urla Wine Route and Art Street.

5. Alaçatı and Sığacık (Best for Summer Beaches, Windmills and Stone Courtyards)

Fifty minutes west of town; stay inside the bougainvillea-draped stone alleys of Alaçatı (choosing quieter Hacımemiş on summer weekends) or inside the 1522 castle walls of Sığacık.
