Where to Stay in Jaipur: Heritage Havelis and Best Areas
Choosing between peaceful heritage haveli districts, central cafe quarters and hillside fort resorts.
Jaipur offers some of the most distinctive accommodation in Asia because dozens of aristocratic 19th- and early-20th-century courtyard mansions (havelis) have been converted by their noble families into characterful boutique hotels. Choosing the right neighbourhood comes down to whether you want quiet garden courtyards after a busy day in the bazaars, walkability to modern cafes, or dramatic Aravalli hill views.
Bani Park and Civil Lines (best for quiet heritage havelis)
Just north-west and south-west of Jaipur Junction railway station, the residential neighbourhoods of Bani Park and leafy Civil Lines are the classic choice for first-time visitors seeking authentic Rajasthani atmosphere without constant street noise. Built in the 1920s to 1940s with wide tree-lined lanes, Bani Park is packed with family-run heritage havelis featuring frescoed arches, bougainvillea courtyards, small swimming pools and rooftop terraces serving home-cooked thalis. You are ten minutes by auto-rickshaw or Metro (from Railway Station or Sindhi Camp) to the walled Pink City.
MI Road (Mirza Ismail Road) and C-Scheme (best for central dining and boutiques)
Running directly along the southern edge of the walled city gates (Ajmeri Gate and Sanganeri Gate), MI Road is Jaipur's historic commercial spine, home to Lassiwala, the Art Deco Raj Mandir Cinema and flagship textile showrooms. Immediately south of MI Road lies C-Scheme (Ashok Nagar), a prosperous, leafy modern district filled with Jaipur's best contemporary textile boutiques, speciality coffee roasters, courtyard bistros and polished mid-range to luxury hotels (including the iconic Rambagh Palace just south near Bhawani Singh Road). Stay here if you want to walk to dinner and shops in the evening.
Inside the Walled Pink City (best for total immersion and early starts)
A handful of restored merchant and noble havelis sit tucked down quiet side alleys inside the walled Pink City around Johari Bazaar and Gangapole. Sleeping inside the walls means you can step out at dawn to see Hawa Mahal, the flower market and Govind Dev Ji temple before traffic builds, though you should expect narrower lanes where taxis drop you a short walk from the door and livelier temple bells and festival sounds.
Amer Road and the Aravalli Foothills (best for luxury resort retreats)
Along the road north-east toward Amber Fort and in the tranquil valleys behind the Aravalli ridge, sprawling palace resorts sit among Mughal-style water gardens, peacocks and rocky hills. This is an idyllic setting if you want a peaceful resort retreat with a pool and spa, provided you are happy taking a twenty-five-minute taxi into the centre for bazaar walks.
