Best Time to Visit Jasper: June to Oct Turquoise Lakes, September Elk Rut, Dark Sky October & Winter

Timing your trip for the June-to-October Spirit Island boat window, September's bugling bull elk or October's Dark Sky Festival.

Sitting 150 kilometres further north than Banff at 52.8° North latitude, Jasper enjoys extraordinarily long 17-hour summer days (in June and July, twilight lasts until late at night) and long, dark autumn nights ideal for spotting the Northern Lights. However, because three of Jasper's marquee roads and boat cruises operate seasonally, check these dates before booking.

1. Peak Lake, Waterfall & Glacier Season (Early June to Early October)

  • June (Peak Waterfall Volume & Baby Wildlife): by the first week of June, the ice clears on Maligne Lake so the Spirit Island boat cruises begin, Miette Hot Springs is open, and spring snowmelt sends Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls roaring at their highest volume of the year. Black and grizzly bears with new cubs feed on roadside dandelions along Maligne Lake Road.
  • July & August (Warmest Weather, Brightest Turquoise Lakes & All High Trails Open): with sunny 22°C to 26°C afternoons and warm glacial melt washing rock flour into the lakes, Maligne Lake, Peyto Lake and the Valley of the Five Lakes glow their brightest turquoise, and high-altitude roads like Cavell Road (mid-June to early Oct) and hikes like Bald Hills and Sulphur Skyline are completely snow-free.

2. Golden Aspens, The Elk Rut & The 'Dark Sky Festival' (September & October)

  • September (Golden Aspens & Bugling Bull Elk): in September, summer crowds drop by 40% while the Spirit Island boats and Miette Hot Springs are still open. Across the Athabasca Valley, groves of trembling aspen turn brilliant gold, and the eerie, flute-like bugling calls of 350-kilogram bull elk echo through town during the autumn mating season.
  • October (The Jasper Dark Sky Festival & Aurora Season): note that the Maligne Lake boat cruise, SkyTram and Miette Hot Springs close right after Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday of October), right as the two-week Jasper Dark Sky Festival celebrates stargazing and Northern Lights.

3. Quiet Winter Wonderland (December to March)

In winter (-5°C to -15°C), ski without lift lines at Marmot Basin, skate on a natural lake rink at Pyramid Lake / Lac Beauvert, and celebrate January's Jasper in January festival. Check what to wear in Jasper.
