Jasper: What to Know Before You Go
Understanding why Jasper is wilder and more car-accessible than Banff, checking trail status, and spotting bears and elk safely.
Short answer: unlike Moraine Lake in Banff, in Jasper you can drive your own car and park for free at both Maligne Lake and Pyramid Lake (though Spirit Island itself is only reachable by boat or kayak), your Parks Canada Pass from Banff is valid seamlessly in Jasper, and because the Maligne Valley is the top bear-and-moose corridor in the Rockies, always carry bear spray and obey wildlife speed limits.
1. How Jasper Differs from Banff (And Why Travellers Fall in Love With It)
When you cross the Sunwapta Pass from Banff into Jasper National Park at the Columbia Icefield, you immediately feel the shift in atmosphere: Jasper is 70% larger in area, has zero luxury designer malls, and retains the laid-back soul of an authentic 1920s Canadian railway and mountaineering town:
- Free Personal Car Access to the Major Lakes: you do not need to fight for early-morning shuttle-bus lottery tickets to visit Maligne Lake, Medicine Lake, Pyramid Island or Mount Edith Cavell; you simply drive up and park for free.
- Checking Current Trail & Canyon Status (Post-2024 Wildfire Regeneration): following the July 2024 Jasper wildfire, downtown Connaught Drive, the Maligne Lake Cruise, the Columbia Icefield, Pyramid Island, the Jasper SkyTram, Miette Hot Springs, Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls and the vast majority of the park are open and thriving (while offering a fascinating look at natural forest regeneration and blooming fireweed). Always check the live Parks Canada Jasper Trail Report for specific boardwalk restorations like Maligne Canyon or Cavell Road before setting out.
2. Three Essential Rules: Petrol Up, Offline Maps & Wildlife Distance
- Only 2 Petrol Stations Along 232 km of the Icefields Parkway: fill your tank to 100% in Jasper Townsite (or Lake Louise) before driving Highway 93.
- Keep 100 Metres from Bears & 30 Metres from Elk or Moose: during the May and June calving season and September and October mating 'Rut', massive bull elk with 6-point antlers walk right through Jasper Townsite, so never walk between a bull elk and his herd.
