What to Wear in Jasper: Windproof Layers for Spirit Island, Bear Spray & Hot Springs Gear
Why standing on the Athabasca Glacier or atop the Jasper SkyTram requires a warm jacket and beanie even on a 25°C July day.
Jasper has a relaxed, authentic mountaineering vibe: there is not a single restaurant or lodge in the entire park where you need formal clothes. Instead, pack using the 3-Layer Mountain System so you can adapt instantly when moving from a sunny 25°C (77°F) afternoon in the Athabasca Valley to the icy katabatic winds blowing off the Columbia Icefield or the 2,463-metre summit of Whistlers Mountain.
Five Practical Packing Rules for Jasper (May to October)
- A Warm Packable Puffer or Fleece, Windproof Rain Shell & Knit Beanie (Mandatory for the Athabasca Glacier & Jasper SkyTram): even on a hot 26°C July afternoon, when you walk out onto the Athabasca Glacier or climb the summit trail from the Jasper SkyTram (2,463m), the temperature drops by 12°C to 15°C with a biting glacial breeze. Always keep a fleece or packable down jacket, a hooded waterproof windbreaker, long trousers and a warm beanie in your daypack.
- Broken-In Waterproof Trail Runners or Hiking Boots: the rocky moraine trails to the Toe of the Athabasca Glacier and Mount Edith Cavell (Path of the Glacier), as well as the steep shale ridge of the Sulphur Skyline, require closed-toe shoes with deep lugged rubber tread; never wear smooth-soled fashion trainers or flip-flops on glacial moraine rock.
- Swimsuit & Flip-Flops for Miette Hot Springs (And Lake Annette / Edith): pack your swimsuit in your daypack when driving out to Miette Hot Springs (and on warm July and August afternoons, locals wade and paddleboard off the sandy beach of Lake Annette).
- Bear Spray + Binoculars for the Maligne Valley: rent or buy a canister of approved Bear Spray at any outdoor shop on Connaught Drive (such as Totem Ski Shop or Gravity Gear) and carry it in a hip holster on every trail, and bring a compact pair of 8x42 binoculars for spotting grizzly bears, moose and mountain goats along Medicine Lake and the Icefields Parkway.
- A Red-Light Headlamp + Warm Thermal Layers for Night Stargazing: if you head out to Pyramid Island late at night to stargaze in the Dark Sky Preserve, mountain nights drop quickly to 4°C to 8°C even in summer, and using the red-light mode on your headlamp preserves your eyes' dark adaptation. Check seasonal weather.
