Best Things to Do in Jasper National Park

Boat-only Spirit Island, 10,000-year-old glaciers, thundering limestone gorges, 40°C mountain hot springs and Dark Sky stargazing.

Jasper's attractions radiate out from the historic railway townsite along four scenic mountain corridors. Here are the ten experiences that define a visit.

  1. Cruise 14 kilometres down Maligne Lake to Boat-Only Spirit Island. Sail across the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies into a glaciated amphitheatre to photograph Canada's most landmark tiny pine islet.
  2. Feel the thunder of Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls. Walk the bridged canyon trails 25 to 40 minutes south of Jasper where glacial rivers carve deep potholes through solid quartzite rock.
  3. Walk to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier, ride the Ice Explorer & step onto the Skywalk. Stand on 10,000-year-old glacial ice at the Columbia Icefield and look 280 metres down into the Sunwapta Valley through a glass floor.
  4. Cross the wooden footbridge to Pyramid Island at Sunrise & visit Patricia Lake. Watch the pink morning alpenglow strike iron-streaked Pyramid Mountain ten minutes above town.
  1. Soak in the 40°C mineral pools of Miette Hot Springs & hike the Sulphur Skyline. Relax in the hottest natural mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies after climbing a 360-degree mountain ridge.
  2. Ride the Jasper SkyTram up Whistlers Mountain (2,263m). Ascend Canada's highest and longest guided aerial tramway and hike the summit trail to 2,463 metres for views of Mount Robson.
  3. Hike the neon-jade Valley of the Five Lakes & Old Fort Point. Follow an easy 4.5-kilometre loop past five consecutive lakes that shift from emerald green to deep sapphire blue.
  4. Stand beneath the winged ice cliff of Mount Edith Cavell & Angel Glacier. Walk the short Path of the Glacier trail to an iceberg-dotted meltwater pond below a 3,363-metre north face.
  1. Explore Disappearing Medicine Lake & the Maligne Valley Wildlife Drive. Spot moose, black bears, grizzly bears and bald eagles along one of North America's greatest karst sinkhole lakes.
  2. Gaze at the Milky Way in the Jasper Dark Sky Preserve & drive 1 hour west to 3,954m Mount Robson. Experience telescope stargazing at the Jasper Planetarium and stand before the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.
