Where to Stay in Jasper: Downtown Connaught Drive vs Pyramid/Beauvert Cabins & Budget Hinton
Choosing between walkable downtown Jasper lodges, historic lakeside cabins on Pyramid or Beauvert Lake, or saving in Hinton.
Because Jasper has strict national-park development limits (and lost several southern town lodges in the 2024 wildfire), summer hotel and cabin inventory inside the park is prized and books out early. Compare these three distinct accommodation zones before locking in your dates.
1. Downtown Jasper Townsite (Connaught Drive, Best for Walkability, Dining & Train Travellers)
If you want to park your car (or step off the train) and walk to 25+ restaurants, cafés, bakeries and outfitters every evening, stay along Connaught Drive in the heart of town:
- Top Townsite Stays: look at recently renovated timber lodges like Forest Park Hotel (featuring both a classic wing and a modern Woodland Wing with an indoor pool and spa), The Crimson Jasper, Chateau Jasper, Whistlers Inn (right opposite the train station with a rooftop hot tub), Marmot Lodge or Mount Robson Inn.
2. Lakeside Cabins (Pyramid Lake, Patricia Lake & Lac Beauvert, Best for Views & Stargazing)
Sleep 10 metres from a mirror-flat mountain lake just 5 to 10 minutes' drive from town:
- Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (On Lac Beauvert, 10 Mins East of Town): a legendary 1922 village of heritage cedar log cabins wrapping around one of the clearest emerald-turquoise spring lakes in Canada, complete with a heated year-round outdoor pool overlooking Mount Edith Cavell.
- Pyramid Lake Resort & Patricia Lake Bungalows (8 to 10 Mins Above Town): chalet-style rooms and kitchen cabins with fireplaces and hot tubs right on the shores of Pyramid and Patricia Lakes (also look at cosy Becker's Chalets or Pine Bungalows along the Athabasca River).
3. The Top Budget Secret: Stay 50 Minutes East in 'Hinton'
Travelling in July or August on a family budget, or booking less than two months ahead when Jasper Townsite is sold out? Book in Hinton, Alberta (located 15 minutes outside the Jasper East Gate on Highway 16, only 25 minutes from Miette Hot Springs and 50 minutes from Jasper Townsite). Modern chain hotels in Hinton (Holiday Inn Express, Best Western Plus, Hampton Inn) include free hot breakfast at much lower nightly rates than inside the park, plus you can walk Hinton's free 3-kilometre Beaver Boardwalk at dusk to watch wild beavers building dams.
