Best Time to Visit Konya: Spring Steppe, Autumn Light and December Şeb-i Arus
Choosing between warm spring and autumn sightseeing weather or the spiritual intensity of December's Şeb-i Arus week.
Sitting at 1,020 metres elevation on the dry Central Anatolian steppe surrounded by distant mountain ranges, Konya has a classic continental climate with four sharp seasons, low humidity and very high sunshine hours. For comfortable walking weather at open-air sites like Çatalhöyük, Sille and Beyşehir, the two prime windows are mid-April to mid-June and September to early November, while 7 to 17 December is the spiritual pinnacle of the year.
Spring: The Season of Roses & Tulips (April, May and early June) brings Konya to life after winter. The world-famous Konya Tulip Fields (in Karatay and Çumra) burst into fifty-million-flower stripes of red, yellow and purple in mid-to-late April, the rose bushes inside the Mevlana Museum courtyard bloom in May, and daytime temperatures climb from 18°C in April to 23°C in May and 28°C in June. In May, the city also hosts the Konya Gastronomy Festival at Kalehan Ecdat Bahçesi.
Summer (late June, July and August) is hot and sunny by day (averaging 30°C to 33°C), but because of the 1,020-metre altitude and dry steppe air, there is zero sticky coastal humidity, the moment you step into the shade of Alaeddin Hill or Meram Vineyards, or when the sun sets in the evening, temperatures drop rapidly to a refreshing 17°C to 19°C. In September, Konya stages the week-long International Konya Mystic Music Festival with free evening concerts by sacred music ensembles from across the world.
Autumn (September, October and early November) offers crisp, cloudless blue skies, daytime highs of 20°C to 27°C, and golden poplar foliage in the valleys of Sille and Beyşehir.
Winter & The Şeb-i Arus Commemorations (December to March) is cold (daytime highs of 4°C to 8°C, dropping below freezing at night with picturesque snowfalls covering the Turquoise Dome). From 7 to 17 December, tens of thousands of visitors arrive for the International Commemoration Ceremonies of Mevlana's Union with the Divine (Şeb-i Arus), book hotels and YHT train seats at least six weeks ahead if visiting in mid-December. Check what to wear in Konya before packing.
