What to Wear in Konya: Modest Mosque Attire, Steppe Layers and Flat Walking Shoes

How to dress comfortably and respectfully for Konya's sacred sites and the 15°C day-to-night plateau temperature swing.

Konya is a welcoming, dignified city where dressing in neat, modest smart-casual layers makes you feel immediately at home whether you are stepping into the Mevlana Museum, browsing the Bedesten Bazaar or dining at a traditional fırın kebabı restaurant.

Four Practical Packing Rules for Konya

  1. Respectful Attire for the Mevlana Museum, Shrines & Mosques: because the Mevlana Museum houses the revered tombs of Rumi and his family alongside a working prayer hall and Qur'an recitation chamber (and because your daily route includes Alaeddin Mosque, Shams of Tabriz, Selimiye and Aziziye Mosques), both men and women should wear clothing that covers shoulders and reaches below the knees (long linen or cotton trousers, jeans, chinos or maxi skirts/dresses). Women should carry a lightweight scarf in their bag to drape over their hair when entering the mausoleum and mosques (free loaner wraps and headscarves are also provided at the Mevlana entrance gate).
  2. Easy-On Shoes and Socks: inside the Mevlana Mausoleum, you pull free disposable plastic overshoes over your footwear; at active mosques (like Selimiye, Aziziye, Kapu and Beyşehir's Eşrefoğlu Mosque), you slip your shoes off completely at the carpeted door. Slip-on loafers or trainers and a clean pair of socks in your pocket make entering ten monuments a day effortless.
  1. Pack for the 15°C Plateau Temperature Swing (Spring, Summer & Autumn): because Konya sits at 1,020 metres on a dry inland plateau, a sunny 28°C May or September afternoon drops quickly to 12°C once the sun goes down. Always bring a light cardigan, denim jacket or windbreaker for evening walks back from the Sema ceremony.
  2. True Winter Warmth for December Şeb-i Arus Visits: if you are coming in December, January or February, night temperatures regularly drop to -3°C to -7°C with frosty steppe winds; pack a proper insulated wool or down winter coat, a beanie hat, gloves, a warm scarf and waterproof boots. Check seasonal weather before flying.
