Sille Village: 327 AD Aya Eleni Church, Rock Caves and Stone Bridges

Eight kilometres from downtown Konya: one of the world's oldest churches (327 AD), rock-cut monasteries and stone bridges.

Tucked into a narrow volcanic rock valley between two steep hills just eight kilometres north-west of central Konya (20 minutes on Municipal Bus 64 from Alaeddin Hill / Kültürpark or 15 minutes by taxi), the historic village of Sille (ancient Sylata) was inhabited continuously for over 5,000 years. Throughout the Seljuk and Ottoman eras, while Konya was the Islamic capital of the plain, Sille flourished just up the valley as a prosperous, self-governing Christian community of Karamanlidika-speaking Orthodox Greeks (who spoke pure Turkish but wrote it using the Greek alphabet) living peacefully alongside Muslim neighbours until the 1923 population exchange, attributed by locals to a personal promise of protection given by Mevlana Rumi after the monks of Sille prayed alongside him during a drought.

Four Essential Stops in Sille Valley

  1. The Church of Aya Eleni (St Helena, Founded in 327 AD): according to the three-line Karamanlidika inscription carved in Turkish with Greek letters over the inner portal, when Helena (mother of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great) passed through Iconium in 327 AD on her pilgrimage to Jerusalem, she saw the early Christian rock-cut tombs and chapels carved into the cliffs of Sille and ordered the construction of this church dedicated to Archangel Michael. Rebuilt in honey-coloured volcanic Sille stone in 1833 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II and lovingly restored into a museum, its dome rests on four stone piers above an ornate carved wooden iconostasis and painted wall frescoes of Christ, the Apostles and Emperor Constantine.
  2. The Rock-Cut Caves and Ak Manastır (Monastery of St Chariton): look up at the soft volcanic tuff cliffs flanking both sides of the valley, much like Cappadocia, they are honeycombed with early Christian rock-cut hermitages, caves and the Time Museum (Zaman Müzesi) inside a restored 19th-century stone chapel.
  1. Hacı Ali Ağa Hamamı, Subaşı Mosque and Stone Bridges: stroll along the cobbled banks of the Sille Stream past seven arched stone and timber footbridges, browsing traditional Sille earthenware pottery workshops (famous for terracotta water jugs and candle-lit testi pots) and drinking herbal tea at riverside courtyard cafés.
  2. Sille Barajı Park (2 km above the village): a modern lakeside park with walking trails, wooden boat rides and picnic terraces.
