Kotor 3-Day Itinerary: Old Town, Bay Islands & Lovćen
Hour-by-hour 3-day Kotor itinerary covering Stari Grad, the dawn San Giovanni Fortress climb, Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks, Blue Cave and Mount Lovćen.
A well-paced 3-day Kotor itinerary lets you experience all three vertical layers of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape without ever getting trapped in midday cruise-ship bottlenecks. You cover the medieval Venetian squares and ramparts at sea level, the island sanctuaries and sea caves across the water of Boka Kotorska. The 1,660-metre sub-alpine peaks of Mount Lovćen towering directly overhead. By scheduling your fortress climbs for 06:30 to 07:30 and taking to the water or the high mountain serpentine road between 10:00 and 16:00. This rhythm gives you cool temperatures, soft photographic light and unhurried access at every landmark.

Day 1: Dawn on San Giovanni Fortress, Stari Grad Palaces & Dobrota Waterfront
- 06:30 to 09:00 | Dawn Ascent to Castle of San Giovanni. Start at the northern River Gate or St Mary's turnstile before the heat builds across the eastern cliff. Climb the 1,355 steps past the 1518 Church of Our Lady of Remedy (Crkva Gospe od Zdravlja) at 100 metres to the 260-metre summit of San Giovanni Fortress. Note that from 08:00 onwards between May and October, municipal stewards collect the €15 conservation fee at both rampart turnstiles (as of November 2026).
- 09:15 to 10:15 | Farmers' Market & Sea Gate Breakfast. Descend to the Valier Bastion market outside the Sea Gate to taste local figs, sheep's cheese in olive oil and smoked ham. Afterward, grab a flaky cheese burek and espresso around the Square of the Arms (Trg od Oružja) beneath the 1602 Clock Tower.
- 10:30 to 13:00 | Cathedral of Saint Tryphon & Maritime Museum. Follow our Stari Grad walking route to the 1166 Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (€4 entry as of November 2026) to admire the 14th-century gilded silver ciborium and upper-floor reliquary treasury. Continue to the Maritime Museum of Montenegro inside the Baroque Grgurina Palace (€5 with audio guide) and visit the twin churches of St Luke (1195) and St Nicholas.
- 13:15 to 15:00 | Seafood Lunch inside the Quiet Northern Quarter. Escape the midday tour groups around the main gate for grilled Adriatic squid and black cuttlefish risotto near the Square of the Blessed Ozana or along the Škurda riverfront.
- 16:00 to 20:30 | Dobrota Promenade Walk & Sunset Swim. Stroll north along the car-free Dobrota lower coastal road past the 18th-century Dabinović and Tripković captain's palaces. Swim off a stone ponta as the setting sun turns the cliffs above Kotor amber, and dine by the water on buzara mussels steamed in white wine and garlic.

Day 2: Baroque Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks & the Outer Bay by Speedboat
- 08:30 to 10:30 | Morning in Baroque Perast. Catch the Blue Line coastal bus (€2, 20 minutes) or a morning boat along the shoreline to Perast before excursion coaches arrive. Climb the 55-metre Bell Tower of St Nicholas Church (€1 entry) for a sweeping view over the Verige Strait and walk west to the Bujović Palace (Perast Museum).
- 10:30 to 12:00 | Wooden Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela). Board a wooden water taxi from the Perast quay (€5 return per person as of November 2026) across to the man-made reef island built over a 1452 shipwreck rock. Inside the domed church and museum (€2 entry), examine the 68 canvases by Baroque master Tripo Kokolja and Jacinta Kunić-Mijović's 25-year embroidery woven with her own hair.
- 13:30 to 16:30 | 3-Hour Outer Bay & Blue Cave Speedboat Loop. Join a small-group speedboat tour from Kotor's Slobode Park pier (€35 to €45 per person as of November 2026, detailed in our Blue Cave and Mamula boat guide). You will enter the Cold War Rakite Yugoslav submarine tunnel carved into the Luštica cliffs. You then circle the 1853 Austro-Hungarian circular fort on Mamula Island, and swim for 30 minutes inside the glowing electric-blue waters of Plava Špilja (Blue Cave).
- 18:30 to 21:30 | Evening Rampart Walk & Krempita Dessert. Walk the free public stretch of Kotor's northern harbour wall above the Kamp Bastion at dusk, followed by a slice of warm Kotor custard pie (Kotorska krempita).

Day 3: The Ladder of Kotor, Njeguši Smokehouses & Mount Lovćen Mausoleum
- 07:30 to 11:30 | Option A (Hikers) , the 70-Switchback Ladder of Kotor. Starting outside the northern River Gate behind the old hydroelectric power station in Škurda canyon, follow the free 19th-century Austro-Hungarian military mule track (the Ladder of Kotor / Krstac trail) as it zigzags up 70 stone hairpins. The path climbs past the abandoned ghost hamlet of Špiljari to the Krstac Pass at 940 metres (6.5 km one way, 3 to 3.5 hours ascent).
Option B (Drivers / Private Car) , the 25-Hairpin Kotor Serpentine Road (P1). Drive or hire a local driver (€60 to €80 for a half-day loop as of November 2026) up the legendary 25 numbered hairpin bends of the Old Cattaro to Cetinje Road. Pause at the Horizont viewpoint and the Trojica Fort junction for full-fjord panoramas. - 12:00 to 13:30 | Prosciutto & Cheese Tasting in Njeguši Village. Descend slightly into the karst valley of Njeguši (900 metres elevation), birthplace of the Petrović-Njegoš royal dynasty. Stop at a smokehouse to taste beechwood-smoked Njeguški pršut (cured mountain ham) and aged sheep's cheese with homemade medovina (honey wine), covered in our Kotor food guide.
- 14:00 to 16:30 | Njegoš Mausoleum at Jezerski Vrh (1,660 m). Continue into Lovćen National Park (€3 park entry + €8 mausoleum ticket as of November 2026) and climb the 461 steps through the mountain tunnel to Ivan Meštrović's granite monument. Here, clear days reveal over 70% of Montenegro's rugged peaks and the shimmering ribbon of Boka Kotorska far below.
- 17:30 to 20:00 | Optional Sunset Return via Kotor to Lovćen Cable Car. Ride the 3.9 km Kotor to Lovćen Cable Car from the Kuk upper station (1,348 m) down to the Dub base station in just 11 minutes (€23 return as of November 2026) as the Adriatic horizon turns crimson.
Rainy Day & Extreme Heat Swaps for Your 3-Day Plan
Because Kotor's mountain microclimate can deliver either a 35°C mid-summer heatwave or a sudden autumn thunderstorm, having a flexible backup swap keeps your three-day itinerary running smoothly. If heavy rain or high mountain fog hides the summit of Mount Lovćen on Day 3, postpone the cable car. Take a 30-minute morning bus along the inner bay to Risan to see the sheltered 2nd-century Roman Villa Mosaics (€5.00 entry). Follow it with an indoor tour of the Maritime Museum of Montenegro (€5.00) and the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon Treasury (€4.00) back in Kotor.
Conversely, if a scorching July afternoon makes climbing the exposed limestone steps of San Giovanni uncomfortable, shift your fortress walk to 06:15 at dawn when the entire eastern cliff is shaded by the mountain ridge. Spend the hottest hours from 12:00 to 16:00 either swimming in the cool karst-spring waters off Bajova Kula Beach near Perast or dining under the shaded stone watermills of Morinj. Here, cold mountain streams run directly beneath the garden tables.
