Moroni 3-Day Itinerary: Medina, Mount Karthala and Northern Beaches

Three days combining Moroni's Swahili medina, the cloud forests of Mount Karthala and the northern beaches.

Three days based in Moroni or neighbouring Itsandra lets you explore the Swahili-Arab medina of the capital on day one, hike into the cloud forest (or up to the summit caldera) of Mount Karthala on day two, and circle the northern half of Grande Comore to its crater lakes and white-sand beaches on day three. Exchange euro cash on arrival and book your Karthala guide on day one; see our before-you-go briefing.

Day 1: Old Friday Mosque, Badjanani Medina, Volo Volo Market & Coelacanth

  • Morning: start on the rocky harbour promenade outside the 15th-century Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi (Old Friday Mosque) as wooden galawa canoes return with the morning catch. Step through the stone archways into the shaded coral-rag alleys of the Badjanani and Mtsangani Medina to admire the carved Swahili wooden doors.
  • Late Morning: walk ten minutes north to Volo Volo Market to buy cured Comorian vanilla pods, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon directly from growers.
  • Afternoon: visit the National Museum of the Comoros (CNDRS) to see the preserved prehistoric Coelacanth (Gombessa) specimen and sultanate history exhibits, and confirm your certified guide for tomorrow's Mount Karthala hike.
  • Evening: head to the Itsandra Corniche to watch sunset across the Mozambique Channel, followed by dinner of langouste à la vanille (lobster in vanilla sauce) or grilled tuna skewers with mkatra foutra coconut bread.

Day 2: Mount Karthala Cloud Forest (or Caldera Trek) & Iconi Cliffs

  • Early Morning: drive fifteen minutes uphill to the trailhead village of Mvouni with your licensed guide to hike onto the slopes of Mount Karthala. Choose between a full-day climb toward the 2,361-metre caldera rim (or overnight camp) and a four-hour morning trek through ylang-ylang groves and giant tree-fern cloud forest listening for endemic Karthala birds.
  • Midday: return down the mountain for a traditional lunch of madaba (pounded cassava leaves simmered in coconut milk) with spiced rice.
  • Afternoon: drive seven kilometres south of Moroni to historic Iconi; climb the volcanic sea cliff of Goulaivoini and explore the coral-stone ruins of the 19th-century Kaviridjeo Sultanate Palace.

Day 3: Northern Grande Comore Loop: Itsandra, Lac Salé & Chomoni Beach

  • Morning: depart with a private driver along the west coast road, stopping at the 19th-century fortified walls of Ntsoudjini and continuing to the northern tip of the island to walk the rim of the emerald-green volcanic crater lake at Lac Salé (Niamawi) and see the dragon-shaped rocks of Trou du Prophète.
  • Midday & Afternoon: curve down the eastern coast to Chomoni Beach, where powder-white coral sand meets black basalt lava boulders, for a long afternoon swim and fresh grilled fish by the lagoon before returning to Moroni or Hahaya Airport.
