Getting to Moroni and Around Grande Comore

Airport transfers from Hahaya, shared versus private taxis around Grande Comore, and inter-island connections.

Moroni sits halfway down the sheltered western coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), the largest and highest of the Comoro Islands. A single coastal ring road (Route Nationale 1 and Route Nationale 2) circles the perimeter of the island around the base of Mount Karthala, making navigation simple once you understand how local taxis operate.

From Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (HAH) to Moroni

Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (HAH) is located at Hahaya, roughly 20 kilometres north of central Moroni along the west coast road:

  • Pre-booked hotel car: hotels in Itsandra and central Moroni arrange private airport collection if you send your arrival details ahead; the scenic coastal drive past black lava headlands takes 25 to 30 minutes to Itsandra and 35 to 40 minutes into the city centre.
  • Official airport taxis: yellow-signed and standard taxis wait outside the arrivals hall. They do not run on meters; agree on the fixed fare in Comorian francs or euros before loading your luggage.

Getting around Moroni and circling Grande Comore

Inside central Moroni, the historic waterfront between the Port, the Old Friday Mosque, Badjanani Medina, Place de France and the National Museum is flat and best explored on foot, while a short shared-taxi hop takes you north to Volo Volo Market or Itsandra. Across town, city taxis work on a shared basis (taxi-ramassage): drivers honk lightly as they pass pedestrians, and you simply call out your destination through the window; if it matches their route, you hop in for a small fixed per-seat fare in Comorian francs.

To explore the northern beaches of Mitsamiouli, Lac Salé and Chomoni Beach, or to reach the trailhead villages of Mvouni and Boboni on Mount Karthala, the most rewarding option is to hire a private car and driver for the day (course spéciale). While fifteen-seat bush taxis (taxis-brousse) link Volo Volo and Gobadjou bus stations with northern and southern villages during morning hours, they depart only when full and rarely run after mid-afternoon.

Continuing to Mohéli (Mwali) and Anjouan (Ndzuwani)

Domestic turboprop flights from Hahaya Airport connect Grande Comore in thirty to forty-five minutes with Bandar Es Eslam Airport on Mohéli and Ouani Airport on Anjouan. Keep a buffer day at the end of your trip in Moroni before your international departure, as inter-island flight schedules can shift with weather.
