What to Wear in Moroni
Breathable modest clothing for the medina, warm rainproof layers for Mount Karthala and reef shoes for lava shores.
Packing for Moroni means preparing for two contrasting altitude zones on the same island: the warm, conservative Swahili-Arab coastal town at sea level, and the cool, misty 2,361-metre summit of Mount Karthala rising immediately behind it.
Modest coastal linen vs Mount Karthala summit gear
- Loose, breathable linen or cotton covering shoulders and knees in town: the Comoros is a traditional Muslim archipelago where residents dress with dignity and care. In Badjanani Medina, Volo Volo Market and rural villages, both men and women should wear lightweight trousers, chinos or ankle-length skirts and dresses paired with sleeved shirts or tunics. You will see Comorian women wearing the two-piece red-and-white patterned shiromani wrap (and often a cooling yellow paste of ground sandalwood and coral called msindzano on their faces against the tropical sun), while men wear crisp embroidered kofia caps and long white kanzou robes on Fridays.
- Broken-in hiking boots, a waterproof shell and a warm fleece for Mount Karthala: if you plan to hike up into the Karthala cloud forest or camp near the caldera rim, do not rely on light trainers. The volcanic scoria and exposed tree roots are steep and slippery, and night-time temperatures at 2,300 metres drop below 10°C with wind and mist. Pack ankle-supporting boots, a waterproof rain jacket and warm thermal layers.
- Reef shoes and modest swimwear for the coast: along the volcanic coves of Itsandra, Iconi and Chomoni Beach, black basalt rock shelves and sea urchins sit near the tideline, making rubber reef shoes invaluable. Standard swimwear is fine at hotel pools and tourist beaches like Chomoni or Maloudja, while a T-shirt and shorts over your swimsuit is respectful on village beaches.
Headscarves, sun protection and power-cut torches
Keep a light cotton scarf in your daypack for stepping inside historic mosques or village courtyards, and pack a small rechargeable headlamp or torch in case of brief evening power cuts on the island. Check seasonal weather before you travel.
