Where to Stay in Moroni: Itsandra Corniche vs City Centre
Choosing between sunset seafront coves in Itsandra, central Moroni hotels near the medina and northern beaches.
Accommodation on Grande Comore is intimate and low-rise, with a handful of established seafront hotels and family-run guesthouses rather than international chain resorts. Because distances between central Moroni and the northern coastal coves are short, most visitors base themselves either in the seaside enclave of Itsandra just north of the capital or right inside central Moroni.
Itsandra and the Northern Corniche (best all-round base for sea views and swimming)
Roughly four to six kilometres north of the old port along the coastal road toward the airport, the rocky shoreline indents into the sheltered bay of Itsandra. Here stands one of the few natural sandy coves near the capital (Itsandra Beach), guarded by a 19th-century stone fortress on the headland above. The Itsandra and Voidjou stretch holds Moroni's leading seafront hotels, offering air-conditioned rooms, saltwater swimming pools, overwater or cliff-edge sunset restaurants serving langouste à la vanille, and reliable backup generators. You are twenty minutes south of Hahaya Airport and ten minutes by taxi north of Badjanani Medina and Volo Volo Market. In the late afternoon, locals gather along the Itsandra corniche to swim and grill skewers over charcoal braziers.
Central Moroni: Port, Badjanani and Oasis Quarter (best for walking the medina)
If you prefer to walk straight out of your hotel to the Old Friday Mosque, the National Museum (CNDRS), bank exchange counters and town cafés without taking a taxi, stay in central Moroni around the Port, Place de France or the southern residential quarter of Oasis / Coulée de Lave. Town hotels here cater primarily to regional business travellers and visiting officials, offering practical air-conditioned rooms and courtyard restaurants within a ten-minute stroll of the medina.
Iconi and Southern Lava Coast (quiet residential guesthouses)
South of the Coulée de Lave (where the 19th-century black lava flow cuts across the road toward the sea) toward Iconi, a few quiet villa guesthouses sit within easy reach of the southern trailheads for Mount Karthala and the government ministries at Beit-Salam.
Mitsamiouli and Northern Beaches (for a beach-focused stay)
Forty kilometres north of Moroni near Maloudja, Lac Salé and Trou du Prophète, small beachfront bungalows in Mitsamiouli let you wake up right on white coral sand, ideal for splitting a longer stay between town and coast. Fit your base into our three-day Moroni itinerary.
