Best Time to Visit Moroni

Cool dry Kusi trade winds from May to October for Mount Karthala treks, plus humpback whale months.

Lying twelve degrees south of the equator in the northern entrance of the Mozambique Channel, Moroni has a warm, humid tropical maritime climate shaped by two alternating Indian Ocean monsoon winds: the cooler, drier Kusi (south-easterly trade winds from May to October) and the hot, rainy Kashkazi (north-westerly monsoon from November to April). For volcano trekking, comfortable medina walks and cultural celebrations, the finest time to visit Moroni is May to October.

The Cool Dry Season (May, June, July, August, September and October) brings the most pleasant weather of the year across Grande Comore. Daytime temperatures in coastal Moroni sit around 27°C to 29°C with lower humidity and refreshing sea breezes, while evenings dip to a comfortable 19°C to 21°C (and drop below 10°C high on the summit rim of Mount Karthala). Crucially, this is the safest and clearest window to hike Mount Karthala, when forest trails are drier and morning clouds part to reveal the giant caldera. Between July and October, migrating humpback whales pass through Comorian waters with their calves, and July and August mark peak season for the Grand Mariage (Anda), when the squares of Badjanani Medina and village plazas fill with brass bands, traditional sword dances (shigoma) and processions in gold-embroidered robes.

Shoulder Months (May and November) offer calm, glassy seas ideal for boat trips, diving over black lava reefs and swimming at Chomoni and Mitsamiouli, alongside fragrant ylang-ylang flower harvests on the lower volcanic slopes.

The Hot Wet Kashkazi Monsoon (December, January, February, March and April) brings high humidity, daytime highs of 31°C to 32°C and heavy tropical downpours, particularly in January, February and March. Because Mount Karthala's upper cloud forest acts as a giant rain trap, summit hikes are muddy and frequently obscured by mist during these months, though the island vegetation is at its greenest and mangoes, lychees, jackfruit and breadfruit overflow in Volo Volo Market.
