Nuuk 3-Day Itinerary: Old Colonial Harbour, Katuaq and Nuup Kangerlua

A balanced three-day route pairing Nuuk's museums and colonial harbour with a deep fjord cruise past Sermitsiaq and a granite ridge hike.

Three full days in Nuuk give you enough time to explore the capital's historic waterfront and museums at an unhurried pace, spend a full day out on the water inside the 160-kilometre fjord system, and hike one of the surrounding granite peaks, while keeping flexibility to swap days if coastal fog or wind rolls in from the Labrador Sea. Combine this route with our transport guide and packing guide.

Day 1: Old Colonial Harbour, Qilakitsoq Mummies, and Katuaq

  • 09:30 - Old Colonial Harbour (Nuutoqaq): Start at Kolonihavnen. Step inside the 1849 red wooden Nuuk Cathedral (Annaassisitta Oqaluffia), climb the rocky ridge above to the 1921 Statue of Hans Egede for views over the painted houses of Myggedalen, and walk down to the beach at low tide to see the 1728 Hans Egede House and Christian Rosing's granite sculpture of Sassuma Arnaa (Mother of the Sea).
  • 11:30 - Greenland National Museum: Spend two hours in the 1936 harbour warehouse of the Greenland National Museum studying the fifteenth-century Qilakitsoq Inuit mummies, 4,000-year-old Saqqaq stone tools, skin-covered kayaks, and beaded kalaallisuut costumes, plus the cooper's workshop and blubber vats outside.
  • 14:00 - Kalaaliaraq Market and Katuaq: Walk 10 minutes uphill along Imaneq to see the daily catch of halibut and seal at Kalaaliaraq Market, pause for lunch beneath the aurora-inspired golden-larch screen of the Katuaq Cultural Centre, and spend the late afternoon viewing the 150 Emanuel A. Petersen paintings and tupilak carvings at the Nuuk Art Museum.

Day 2: Nuup Kangerlua Fjord Cruise, Sermitsiaq, and Qooqqut or Kapisillit

  • 09:00 - Sermitsiaq Waterfall and Whale Watching: Board a scheduled charter boat into Nuup Kangerlua. Cruise 15 kilometres northeast to the southern cliffs of 1,210-metre Sermitsiaq Island, where glacial meltwater plunges down sheer gneiss cliffs into the sea, scanning the deep channels for humpback and minke whales.
  • 12:30 - Qooqqut Catch-and-Cook or Kapisillit Icefjord: Drop a handline over the rocky reef for Atlantic cod or redfish and have your catch cooked to order at the sheltered summer restaurant in Qooqqut, or take a full-day boat 75 kilometres northeast to Kapisillit and the Kangersuneq Icefjord to hike above the floating glacier pack.
  • 19:00 - Arctic Dinner in Nuuk Centrum: Return to town for a dinner of autumn reindeer or snow crab, followed by a flaming Greenlandic coffee.

Day 3: New Herrnhut, Coastal Boardwalk, and Quassussuaq Hike

  • 09:30 - Coastal Boardwalk and New Herrnhut: Follow the raised wooden walkway south from Kolonihavnen along the rocky tide line to the 1747 Moravian Brethren Mission House at New Herrnhut.
  • 11:30 - Ilimmarfik Campus: Ride Nuup Bussii Line 3 north to the timber-and-glass Ilimmarfik campus of the University of Greenland and the nearby nine-hole Arctic golf course.
  • 13:30 - Quassussuaq (Lille Malene) Ridge Hike: Follow the orange cairns on the three-to-four-hour loop up 420-metre Quassussuaq for views over the Nuuk peninsula, the rebuilt airport runway, and Sermitsiaq before an evening glacial-water ale in town.
