Best Time to Visit Nuuk: Month-by-Month Guide

Month-by-month weather using Danish Meteorological Institute normals, plus the best windows for humpback whales, hiking, and the northern lights.

Nuuk has a maritime-influenced polar tundra climate (Köppen ET), tempered by the open waters of the Labrador Sea and the West Greenland Current so that midwinter temperatures are milder than in inland Alaska or eastern Siberia at the same latitude. According to Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) 1991 to 2020 climate normals, February is the coldest month (average high -6.0°C, average low -10.9°C) and July is the warmest (average high 11.1°C, average low 4.4°C), with an annual mean temperature of -0.9°C and 852.6 millimetres of precipitation spread across 159.6 days. Because the July monthly mean of 7.4°C remains below the 10°C treeline threshold, Nuuk's landscape is open granite tundra carpeted with moss, crowberry, and dwarf willow.

Summer (June to August): 21-Hour Daylight, Whales, and Fjord Cruises

Summer is the most popular season for open-boat navigation in Nuup Kangerlua, catch-and-cook dining at Qooqqut, and dry-rock hiking on Quassussuaq and Ukkusissat. Because Nuuk sits 240 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, the sun dips briefly below the northern horizon around midnight rather than staying up for 24 hours: on 21 June, the sun sets at 01:03 and rises at 03:53, bathing the fjord in continuous golden civil twilight. On 21 June, Greenland celebrates its National Day (Ullortuneq) with choir services at Nuuk Cathedral, citizens dressed in beaded kalaallisuut national costumes, and kayak rolling displays at Kolonihavnen. June is the sunniest and driest month of the year (204 sunshine hours and 10.5 precipitation days), while July (average high 11.1°C, 195.3 sunshine hours) and August (average high 10.2°C) bring peak humpback and minke whale sightings.

Autumn (September to November): Berry Tundra and Early Aurora

By late August and September, night skies darken enough for the first aurora borealis displays to arch over Sermitsiaq while the fjords remain ice-free for boat trips to Kapisillit and the Nuuk Icefjord. Daytime highs average 6.5°C in September, 2.3°C in October, and -1.1°C in November. September is the wettest month of the year (104.6 millimetres across 14.1 days), turning the tundra rust-red as residents harvest wild crowberries and blueberries and the autumn reindeer and muskox season supplies Nuuk's restaurants and Kalaaliaraq Market.

Winter and Spring (December to May): Northern Lights and Ski Season

On the winter solstice (21 December), the sun rises at 11:22 and sets at 15:28, offering four hours of pastel pink daylight and long dark evenings ideal for watching the northern lights from the coastal boardwalk and exploring the Greenland National Museum. Between February and April, monthly sunshine climbs from 65 hours in February to 148.8 hours in March and 180 hours in April, opening the prime spring ski and snowshoe season on the 300-metre ski lift of Quassussuaq.
