Nuuk: Everything You Need to Know

Everything you need to plan a trip to Greenland's capital: districts, Inuit heritage, the expanded international airport, and fjord logistics.

Occupying a narrow rocky peninsula at the mouth of the 160-kilometre Nuup Kangerlua fjord, about 240 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle and 10 kilometres inland from the open Labrador Sea, Nuuk is the capital and most populous city of Greenland. With 20,113 residents recorded in January 2025, it holds more than a third of the territory's population while retaining the intimacy of a coastal settlement where humpback whales surface offshore and marked mountain trails begin at the edge of residential streets. Its latitude at 64°10′N makes it the world's northernmost capital city, sitting a few kilometres farther north than Reykjavík.

Human presence around the peninsula stretches back more than four millennia. Palaeoeskimo hunters of the Saqqaq culture camped near Qoornoq around 2200 BCE, followed for centuries by Dorset communities around Kangeq Island until roughly 1000 CE and Norse farmers of the Western Settlement until the fifteenth century. In 1728, royal governor Claus Paarss and Norwegian-Danish Lutheran missionary Hans Egede relocated their earlier 1721 Hope Colony from Kangeq Island to the Inuit cape of Nûk, naming the outpost Godthaab ("Good Hope"). When Greenland established Home Rule on 1 May 1979, the city officially restored its Kalaallisut name, Nuuk ("The Cape").

How the City Is Organised

Nuuk stretches along a north-to-south granite spine bordered by water on three sides. On the western shore facing the fjord entrance, Nuutoqaq (the Old Colonial Harbour) clusters around the 1849 red wooden Nuuk Cathedral, the 1728 Hans Egede House, and the waterfront warehouses of the Greenland National Museum. A gentle 10-minute walk east brings you to Nuuk Centrum along Imaneq and the main thoroughfare of Aqqusinersuaq, where the Katuaq Cultural Centre, the 31-seat Inatsisartut parliament, Nuuk Center, and Kalaaliaraq Market stand. Further northeast lie the residential district of Nuussuaq, the Ilimmarfik university campus, the rebuilt runway of Nuuk Airport, and the modern fjord-side suburb of Qinngorput at the foot of Ukkusissat (Store Malene).

Clean Hydroelectric Power and Everyday Logistics

Since 1993, the state utility Nukissiorfiit has supplied Nuuk's electricity from the Buksefjord hydroelectric power plant via a 132-kilovolt overhead line that crosses the Ameralik fjord in a single 5,376-metre (17,638-foot) free span. Because no intercity roads exist anywhere in Greenland, every journey beyond the capital's 80 kilometres of paved streets takes place by boat, helicopter, or fixed-wing aircraft. Within the urban area, yellow Nuup Bussii buses and licensed taxis make moving between the harbour, hotels, and mountain trailheads straightforward in every season.

Money, Connectivity, and Booking Ahead

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and uses the Danish krone (DKK), though it is not part of the European Union or the Schengen fee-free roaming zone, so check your mobile operator's data rates or purchase a local Tusass eSIM on arrival. Contactless Visa and Mastercard cards work across hotels, supermarkets (Pisiffik, Brugseni, and Spar), buses, and restaurants. Because summer cruise calls and parliamentary sessions fill central rooms quickly, reserve both accommodation in Nuuk Centrum and small-group boat charters into Nuup Kangerlua well ahead of your trip.
