What to Wear in Nuuk: Seasonal Packing Guide

How to dress for Nuuk's maritime tundra climate in every season, from open-boat fjord spray in July to icy pavements and northern lights nights in winter.

Dressing comfortably in Nuuk means preparing for wind, salt spray, and sharp microclimate shifts between sheltered sunny streets and open fjord water. Even when a calm July afternoon reaches 11.1°C outside the Katuaq Cultural Centre (and occasional summer warm spells have reached a record 26.3°C), stepping aboard a boat into Nuup Kangerlua where glacial meltwater sits near 2°C drops the wind-chill temperature below freezing within minutes. Conversely, winter warm föhn winds can briefly lift January temperatures above freezing before plunging back to -10°C overnight. Pair this checklist with our month-by-month weather guide.

The Three-Layer System for Summer and Autumn (June to September)

  • Moisture-wicking base layer: Pack two or three long-sleeved 200-weight merino wool tops and merino tights. Avoid cotton shirts, which hold sweat during steep ascents of Quassussuaq or Ukkusissat and chill rapidly on exposed ridges.
  • Insulating mid layer: Bring a heavyweight fleece pullover or a packable down or synthetic insulated jacket that fits neatly in your daypack and layers under a shell on fjord boat decks.
  • Windproof and waterproof outer shell: A breathable, seam-sealed Gore-Tex or equivalent hooded jacket and windproof trekking trousers protect against sudden Labrador Sea showers (July and August average 13 rain days per month) and boat spray.
  • Summer accessories: Always carry a woollen beanie, windproof gloves, polarized UV400 sunglasses for glare off water and icebergs, SPF 30+ sunscreen, and a fine-mesh head net for midges and mosquitoes when hiking sheltered inland valleys around Kapisillit or Qooqqut in July and early August.

Winter and Spring Packing (October to May)

From October through April, when average lows sit between -5.2°C and -10.9°C and coastal gusts can reach 68 kilometres per hour, bring a heavy hooded down parka extending below the hips, insulated windproof snow trousers, a fleece neck warmer or balaclava, and thick insulated mittens worn over thin touchscreen merino liner gloves so your fingers stay warm while photographing the northern lights along the coastal boardwalk. Chemical hand and toe warmers are also helpful during multi-hour night shoots.

Footwear, Ice Cleats, and Indoor Dress

Waterproof ankle-high hiking boots with deep rubber lugs are essential for gripping bare Archaean granite slabs and crossing damp moss tundra. From November to April, freeze-thaw cycles coat Nuuk's sloped streets and steps around Kolonihavnen in black ice; pack removable metal microspikes (ice cleats) to stretch over your boots when walking between Nuuk Centrum hotels and the harbour. Indoors, buildings are well heated and dress in restaurants and concerts at Katuaq is relaxed smart-casual.
