Oaxaca International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de Oaxaca, code OAX) sits just 8.5 kilometres directly south of the Zócalo in the municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán. As of November 2026, OAX handles nonstop flights from:
- United States Gateways. Direct flights operate year-round from Houston (IAH) on United Airlines, Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on American Airlines, and Los Angeles (LAX) on Volaris.
- Mexican Domestic Hubs. Over a dozen daily flights connect OAX with Mexico City Benito Juárez (MEX). Felipe Ángeles (NLU) in 65 minutes, together with direct domestic routes from Cancún (CUN). Guadalajara (GDL), Monterrey (MTY), Mérida (MID), and Tijuana (TIJ) (where US travellers from San Diego can walk directly across the Cross Border Xpress skybridge into the Tijuana terminal).

Getting from OAX Airport to Your Hotel in Centro Histórico
Municipal regulations prohibit normal yellow city taxis from picking up arriving passengers inside the airport perimeter. Book all official ground transport at the Transporte Terrestre ticket booth before exiting the terminal doors:
- Option A , Official Shared Colectivo Van (Best Value, Door-to-Door). Buy a Colectivo ticket (125 to 140 MXN per person for Zone 1 Centro Histórico / Jalatlaco as of November 2026). Hand your ticket to the curb dispatcher, who assigns you to an air-conditioned 12-passenger Sprinter van. The driver drops every passenger directly at their hotel door in 20 to 30 minutes.
- Option B , Official Private Airport Taxi (Especial). Groups of three or four can skip the shared van queue by buying an Especial private taxi voucher (420 to 480 MXN per car as of November 2026).
- Return to OAX Airport. While yellow city taxis cannot pick up at the airport, any yellow street taxi CAN drop you off at OAX Airport. The 20-minute ride from Centro Histórico costs 200 to 250 MXN.
By ADO Luxury Highway Bus from Mexico City and Puebla
Travelling overland from Mexico City or Puebla to Oaxaca on the toll superhighway (Autopista 135D) is scenic and safe. The highway winds past the giant columnar cacti of the UNESCO-listed Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve:
- Choosing Your Bus Class: ADO (`ado.com.mx`) runs three tiers from Mexico City: ADO Primera (44 seats, ~750 MXN), ADO GL (40 extra-legroom seats with Wi-Fi and coffee, ~980 MXN), and ADO Platino (27 lie-flat pods, ~1,280 MXN as of November 2026).
- Bus Terminal Location in Oaxaca: First-class ADO buses arrive at the Oaxaca First-Class Bus Terminal (Terminal ADO Oaxaca) on Boulevard Niños Héroes / Calzada Héroes de Chapultepec in Barrio de Jalatlaco. The terminal sits just 800 metres northeast of Templo de Santo Domingo, a safe 10-minute walk or 60-MXN taxi ride.

The Game-Changer: The New 2.5-Hour Highway to Puerto Escondido
For decades, travelling between Oaxaca City and the Pacific coast required a 7-hour minibus ride over Old Highway 175 or a small Cessna flight. With the opening of the Barranca Larga to Ventanilla Superhighway (175D) through the mountains, you now have two fast daily options:
- ADO Coaches to Puerto Escondido. Coaches depart multiple times daily from the main ADO Terminal (and the southern ADO Cristobal Colón terminal) and reach Puerto Escondido in 3 hours (350 to 490 MXN as of November 2026).
- Express Sprinter Vans (Ruta Coatlanes / Villa del Pacífico). Vans depart every 30 to 60 minutes from near Calle Bustamante, reaching Puerto Escondido in 2 hours 30 minutes for 300 MXN. To visit the mountain village of San José del Pacífico, take the older Líneas Unidas vans via Old Highway 175.
If you plan to take a shared colectivo taxi into the Tlacolula, Etla. Alternatively, Ocotlán valleys during your stay, head to the main shared taxi ranks along the Periférico ring road near the Central de Abastos or opposite the Eduardo Vasconcelos Baseball Stadium. Maroon-and-white sedans depart every few minutes as soon as four passengers fill the seats, costing just 25 to 45 MXN per person depending on the village distance (as of November 2026). Always carry small peso bills and confirm that the windshield placard lists your target town before climbing into the back seat.
If you are continuing south to the Pacific beaches of Huatulco or Mazunte, a second modern toll highway connects Oaxaca City to Ventanilla and Huatulco in just over three hours by express coach or coastal van. Booking your seat on the official ADO mobile app a day ahead guarantees a window view of the mountain valleys.
Keep small-denomination 20, 50 and 100 MXN banknotes in an accessible pocket for neighbourhood bakeries, municipal market toilets and rural colectivo fares. Carrying a reusable water bottle and a light cotton layer ensures comfort as you move between warm sunlit plazas and cool Colonial stone interiors.
