Punta del Este: Mansa vs Brava, Paradas & Coastal Layout
Plan your visit to Punta del Este, Uruguay: understand how the Peninsula divides calm Playa Mansa from Atlantic Playa Brava, how numbered Paradas work, and how the coast stretches from Punta Ballena to José Ignacio.
Stretching along the granite headlands and pine woods of Maldonado Department two hours east of Montevideo, Punta del Este is far more than a single beach town. In practice, it is a fifty-kilometre coastal ribbon linking five distinct maritime landscapes from west to east.

How the Coastline Is Organised (West to East)
- Punta Ballena & Portezuelo (15 km West): A dramatic rocky ridge jutting into the Río de la Plata, famous for artist Carlos Páez Vilaró's whitewashed Casapueblo, the 192-hectare Arboretum Lussich, and sweeping beaches at Solanas and Portezuelo.
- Playa Mansa & Isla Gorriti (Western Bay): Curving from Punta Ballena to Parada 1 on the Peninsula, Playa Mansa offers calm, sheltered estuary water, a pine-shaded wooden boardwalk, and direct sunset views behind Isla Gorriti.
- La Península (Historic Core & Puerto): The walkable narrow cape where Avenida Gorlero, the 1860 Lighthouse, the Puerto yacht marina, and the boundary marker between the Río de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean sit.
- Playa Brava, La Barra & Manantiales (Eastern Surf Coast): Starting at Mario Irarrázabal's La Mano sculpture at Parada 1, Playa Brava runs ten kilometres north-east to the mouth of the Arroyo Maldonado and its twin undulating bridges (Puente Leonel Viera), continuing through the surf villages of La Barra and Manantiales to MACA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry).
- José Ignacio & Laguna Garzón (30 to 40 km North-East): A low-key fishing peninsula crowned by the 1877 José Ignacio Lighthouse and Rafael Viñoly's circular bridge across Laguna Garzón.

Understanding the Numbered Paradas
Along both Playa Mansa and Playa Brava, locations are identified by numbered bus stops called Paradas, starting at Parada 1 at the neck of the Peninsula (where both La Mano and the main bus terminal stand) and counting upward to Parada 40 along Playa Mansa and Parada 30 toward La Barra on Playa Brava.
