San Diego 3-Day Itinerary: Balboa Park, Bayfront, La Jolla and Coronado Route

A day-by-day route grouping Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, the downtown Embarcadero, Coronado Island, La Jolla, and Torrey Pines without backtracking.

With three full days in San Diego, you can experience the city's cultural plateau, its historic naval harbor, and its dramatic Pacific cliffs without spending half your vacation stuck on Interstate 5. We designed this three-day itinerary by clustering neighboring sights together each day: Day 1 covers the central mesa of Balboa Park and the downtown bayfront; Day 2 explores Point Loma, Coronado across the bay, and Old Town; and Day 3 heads up the northern coastline to La Jolla and Torrey Pines.

Day 1: Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo and Little Italy

  • Morning at the San Diego Zoo: Arrive at the San Diego Zoo right as the gates open while the air is cool and wildlife is active. Ride the included Guided Bus Tour for an overview, walk downhill through Africa Rocks and Panda Ridge, and take the Skyfari aerial tram across the eucalyptus canopy.
  • Afternoon Along El Prado in Balboa Park: Walk directly south out of the zoo plaza into Balboa Park. Cross the Cabrillo Bridge for photos, stroll beneath the Spanish Colonial Revival arcades of El Prado past the Botanical Building lily pond, visit the Japanese Friendship Garden or one of the flagship art museums, and see the outdoor Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
  • Evening in Little Italy or North Park: Head down the hill to Little Italy for an aperitivo around Piazza della Famiglia and handmade pasta or wood-fired pizza along India Street. If you prefer craft beer and indie cocktail bars, spend your evening ten minutes northeast of the park along 30th Street in North Park.

Day 2: USS Midway, Coronado Island, Point Loma and Old Town

  • Morning on the Downtown Embarcadero: Start along the Embarcadero waterfront. Spend two to three hours aboard the USS Midway Museum exploring the flight deck jets and island bridge, or board the 1863 Star of India at the neighboring Maritime Museum of San Diego.
  • Midday Ferry to Coronado Island: Walk to Broadway Pier and catch the fifteen-minute passenger ferry across the bay to Coronado Island. Rent a bicycle or ride the bus down Orange Avenue to walk the sparkling mica sands of Coronado Central Beach and admire the red Victorian turrets of the 1888 Hotel del Coronado.
  • Late Afternoon at Point Loma and Sunset Cliffs: Drive or take a rideshare out to the tip of Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma for a panoramic view over the entire harbor and low-tide pools, then catch golden hour along the rugged sandstone bluffs of Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach.
  • Evening in Old Town or the Gaslamp Quarter: Finish with handmade corn tortillas and courtyard music in Old Town San Diego, or catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park followed by drinks in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Day 3: La Jolla Coves, Sea Caves, Torrey Pines and Beach Boardwalks

  • Morning in La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove: Start early at La Jolla Shores with a guided tandem kayak tour out to the Seven Sea Caves (or snorkel with harmless leopard sharks in late summer). Afterward, walk the coastal promenade around La Jolla Cove and Children's Pool to watch barking California sea lions and harbor seals basking on the rocks.
  • Afternoon Hike at Torrey Pines: Head ten minutes north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (stopping at the Gliderport cliffs to watch paragliders soar overhead). Hike the Guy Fleming and Razor Point loops before descending the Beach Trail to walk along the surf.
  • Final Evening Along Mission Beach and Pacific Beach: Wrap up your trip riding the historic 1925 Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster at Belmont Park and watching the sun sink into the Pacific from Crystal Pier over Baja fish tacos and a local West Coast IPA.
