Anza-Borrego Desert and Julian Day Trip: Galleta Meadows Sculptures, Apple Pie and Slot Canyons

Driving east from the Pacific coast through the mountain gold-mining town of Julian and down into Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Borrego Springs.

One of the greatest geographical surprises of Southern California is how quickly the scenery transforms when you drive east from the Pacific coast of San Diego. In less than ninety minutes on the road, you climb four thousand feet up into the pine-and-oak forests of the Cuyamaca Mountains to reach the 1870s gold-rush town of Julian, before dropping down a dramatic mountain highway straight onto the desert floor of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California. Combining both stops creates an memorable loop day trip through three completely different climate zones.

Stop 1: Historic Julian, Gold Mines and Mountain Apple Pie

Following Interstate 8 East and turning north up scenic State Route 79 through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park brings you into Julian, a false-fronted historic mountain village founded after formerly enslaved settler Fred Coleman discovered gold in a creek bed in 1869. When the brief gold boom faded, pioneers realized the crisp four-season mountain air and mineral soil at 4,200 feet were perfect for growing apples.

Today, walking the four blocks of Main Street feels like stepping onto a nineteenth-century Western film set. Every visitor stops at one of the historic town bakeries (led by the Julian Pie Company, Mom's Pie House, and California Mountain Bakery) for a warm slice of fresh Dutch crumble apple pie topped with cinnamon ice cream, paired with local hard apple cider. While in town, you can don a hard hat for an underground tour through the tunnels of the 1870 Eagle and High Peak Gold Mine at the end of C Street, browse the Pioneer Museum, or hike the mountain viewpoint loop at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve just north of town.

Stop 2: Dropping Down Banner Grade to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

From Julian, follow State Route 78 East down the winding switchbacks of Banner Grade, watching pine trees give way within fifteen minutes to cholla cacti, ocotillo, and red desert badlands, before turning north onto County Route S3 into the village of Borrego Springs (an official International Dark Sky Community completely surrounded by the six-hundred-thousand-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park).

Even without a four-wheel-drive vehicle, three desert highlights are accessible right off paved roads:

  • Galleta Meadows Metal Sky Art Sculptures: Scattered across open desert sands north and south of Borrego Springs along Borrego Springs Road are more than 130 giant, rust-colored welded steel sculptures created by artist Ricardo Breceda, including prehistoric saber-toothed cats, mammoths, giant scorpions, dinosaurs, and a colossal 350-foot serpent undulating straight across the road. Stopping along the sandy shoulders to walk among them is completely free.
  • Borrego Palm Canyon Trail: Starting just behind the excellent underground State Park Visitor Center, this three-mile round-trip rocky trail climbs alongside a desert stream to a hidden canyon oasis of native California fan palms where endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep frequently come down from the rocky ridges to drink.
  • The Slot and Fonts Point Badlands: Off Highway 78 at Butte Pass Road (passable by careful high-clearance cars on dry days), you can descend into the narrow siltstone passages of The Slot, while four-wheel-drive vehicles can reach Fonts Point, often called the "Grand Canyon of California."

Timing Your Trip and Spring Superblooms

The best months to visit Julian and Anza-Borrego are October through April. In late February and March after wet winters, the desert valley erupts in purple sand verbena, desert sunflowers, and golden poppies. Avoid the low desert floor between June and September, when temperatures in Borrego Springs regularly exceed 105°F (40°C).
