San Diego Zoo: Canyon Trails, Skyfari Aerial Tram and Wildlife Route

Navigating the San Diego Zoo's upper mesas and canyon habitats, riding the Skyfari Aerial Tram and Kangaroo Bus, and visiting Africa Rocks and Panda Ridge.

Tucked into a hundred acres of steep, subtropical canyons at the northern edge of Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern, cageless wildlife conservation. Founded after the 1915 exposition when Dr. Harry Wegeforth heard a lion roaring from an abandoned exhibition cage, the zoo was among the first in the world to replace iron bars with open moated enclosures and lush botanical landscapes. Because the grounds doubles as an accredited botanical garden holding over seven hundred thousand exotic plants, and because the trails plunge down into deep ravines before climbing back to the mesa rim, having a clear route strategy saves your legs and ensures you do not miss key habitats.

Understanding the Canyon Geography: Mesas vs Ravines

When you pass through the main entrance plaza off Park Boulevard beneath the giant concrete lion statue, the zoo spreads out across two distinct elevations. The upper mesa rims hold the flattest pathways, while the center of the park is carved by steep wooded canyons connected by elevated tree-canopy bridges, escalators, and winding hillside trails.

To explore the zoo without climbing uphill in the midday warmth, always try to walk the canyon trails downhill (from the upper rims toward the bottom of Center Street and Front Street) and use the zoo's mechanical escalators, the Bashor Bridge pedestrian span, or the aerial tram to return to the upper level.

Key Wildlife Zones Not to Miss

  • Africa Rocks (Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks): Winding through a central canyon in six distinct ecological zones, this flagship habitat takes you past a surging wave pool filled with endangered African penguins along a rocky cobblestone beach, Madagascar forest lemurs, dwarf crocodiles, leopard habitats, and a high hillside kopje where hamadryas baboons and geladas live side by side.
  • Panda Ridge and Asian Passage: Positioned near the bottom of the central canyon, Panda Ridge is designed to replicate the misty mountain bamboo forests of Sichuan. Check the official San Diego Zoo mobile app on the morning of your visit for the current giant panda viewing procedure, which uses either a timed digital queue QR reservation or a standby walking lane depending on daily crowd flow. Nearby trails lead past red pandas, snow leopards, and Sun Bear Forest.
  • Elephant Odyssey and Northern Frontier: Covering the expansive upper northwestern mesa, Elephant Odyssey traces the evolutionary link between California's prehistoric Ice Age megafauna and modern Asian elephants, California condors, jaguars, and llamas. Following the rim path north brings you to Polar Bear Plunge at the far corner of the grounds.
  • Lost Forest and Outback: Right near the front entrance sits the Australian Outback, home to one of the largest koala colonies outside Australia alongside Tasmanian devils and kookaburras. Just behind it, the two-tiered Scripps Aviary and Owens Aviary let you walk along elevated wooden boardwalks right through the rainforest canopy among free-flying tropical birds, while Hippo Trail and Monkey Trails run along the shaded canyon floor below.

Using the Guided Bus, Kangaroo Bus and Skyfari Aerial Tram

Your standard admission ticket includes three internal transport systems that make navigating the hills effortless. First, right after entering in the morning, hop onto the Guided Bus Tour, a double-decker open-air bus that loops around nearly seventy percent of the zoo's perimeter in thirty-five minutes, giving you an effortless overview of the terrain. Second, the hop-on, hop-off Kangaroo Express Bus stops at four color-coded stations across the park whenever you want to skip a long walk. Third, the Skyfari Aerial Tram glides high above the eucalyptus treetops from the East Terminal (near the front entrance and koalas) to the West Terminal (at Northern Frontier and Elephant Odyssey), offering sweeping views over Balboa Park and downtown San Diego. Note that the urban zoo in Balboa Park is completely separate from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park located thirty-five miles north in Escondido.
