Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach in San Diego: Coastal Bluffs, OB Pier and Newport Ave
Walking the dramatic sandstone rims of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park at golden hour and exploring Newport Avenue, Dog Beach, and the Wednesday market in Ocean Beach.
On the northwestern ocean flank of the Point Loma peninsula, just south of the San Diego River mouth and completely shielded from through-highways, sit two of San Diego's most fiercely independent coastal Gems: the bohemian surf village of Ocean Beach (universally called "OB" by locals) and the dramatic 68-acre coastal strip of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. While other beach neighborhoods have added luxury high-rises and resort chains, Ocean Beach has preserved its laid-back 1960s counterculture spirit of antique malls, surfboard shapers, fish taco counters, and neighborhood coffee roasters. Pairing an afternoon in OB with a golden-hour walk along Sunset Cliffs creates one of the most memorable half-days on the coast.
Walking the Rim of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Stretching for a mile and a half south from Adair Street down to Ladera Street (where it meets the hillside campus of Point Loma Nazarene University), Sunset Cliffs Boulevard hugs a sheer line of golden, wind-sculpted sandstone bluffs dropping straight into the surging Pacific surf. Below the cliffs lie sea caves, natural rock arches, and pocket reefs where experienced local surfers paddle out down steep cliff staircases.
The best way to experience the park is on foot starting about ninety minutes before sunset. Park along one of the dirt turnouts near Luscomb's Point (at the foot of Hill Street) or down at the southern Ladera Street parking lot, where a network of uncrowded coastal hillside trails winds through native agave and sage scrub. As the sun drops toward the western horizon, hundreds of locals sit along the bluff ledges watching the cliffs glow deep amber and crimson. Because the sandstone ledges are actively eroding and undercut by waves, stay behind posted warning fences, never walk out onto wet lower rock shelves during high surf, and wear sneakers rather than slippery flip-flops.
Ocean Beach: Newport Avenue, Dog Beach and the Pier View
At the northern end of the cliffs, Sunset Cliffs Boulevard leads directly into the heart of Ocean Beach along Newport Avenue. For three blocks leading straight down to the sand, Newport Avenue is lined with vintage record shops, surf shops, classic burger counters, craft brewery tasting rooms, and an entire block of multi-dealer antique stores where you can browse mid-century Californian collectibles under towering Mexican fan palms.
At the foot of Newport Avenue stretches the concrete span of the historic 1966 Ocean Beach Municipal Pier (check current city status during your visit, as storm surge damage periodically closes the pier deck while the city prepares its modern replacement design; the rocky tide pools just south of the pier pilings remain accessible at low tide). Walking twenty minutes north along the wide sandy beach brings you to the southern jetty of the San Diego River channel and Ocean Beach Dog Beach, one of the first official off-leash dog beaches in the United States, where dozens of dogs sprint happily through the shallow surf.
The Wednesday Ocean Beach Farmers Market
If you are in San Diego on a Wednesday afternoon, head straight to the 4900 block of Newport Avenue starting before dawn for the weekly OB Farmers Market. Combining farm produce stands with street food, handmade arts, drum circles on the beach lawn at Veterans Plaza, and live street musicians, it captures the authentic neighborhood soul of Ocean Beach better than anywhere else in the city. MTS Bus Route 35 connects Ocean Beach directly with the Old Town Transit Center in fifteen minutes.
