North Park and Hillcrest in San Diego: 30th Street Breweries, Cafes and Uptown Walk
Exploring San Diego's walkable uptown neighbourhoods along University Avenue and 30th Street in North Park and the Sunday farmers market in Hillcrest.
Directly bordering the northern and northeastern edges of Balboa Park sit Hillcrest and North Park, the two historic streetcar suburbs that anchor Uptown San Diego. While coastal neighborhoods revolve around surfboards and boardwalks, these leafy mesa-top communities are where locals actually spend their evenings, browsing independent bookstores, sipping espresso on sunny corner patios, exploring vintage clothing boutiques, and sampling tasting rooms along one of America's most famous craft beer corridors. Connected down the middle by University Avenue and wooden canyon footbridges, both neighborhoods can easily be explored together in a single afternoon and evening.
North Park: 30th Street, the Observatory and Craftsman Bungalows
Centered around the intersection of University Avenue and 30th Street beneath its glowing vintage neon neighborhood sign, North Park serves as San Diego's creative and culinary hub. Anchoring the heart of the intersection is the historic 1929 Observatory North Park theatre, a restored Spanish Churrigueresque movie palace that now hosts touring indie bands alongside an attached brewery tasting room.
Walking north and south along 30th Street reveals why beer writers frequently call this avenue one of the greatest craft beer streets in the world: within a one-mile walk, more than a dozen local taprooms, fermenteries, and neighborhood gastro-pubs pour West Coast IPAs, barrel-aged stouts, and sour ales. Between the breweries along Ray Street, North Park Way, and University Avenue, you will find independent record stores, ceramic studios, third-wave coffee roasters, and casual eateries ranging from wood-fired sourdough pizza to Oaxacan mole kitchens. One block off the commercial strip, quiet side streets showcase early twentieth-century California Craftsman bungalows shaded by jacaranda and palm trees.
Hillcrest: University Avenue, Canyon Bridges and the Sunday Market
Just west of North Park across Florida Canyon lies Hillcrest, San Diego's lively, welcoming LGBTQ+ hub and one of its oldest commercial villages. Entering beneath the historic neon Hillcrest Sign at Fifth and University Avenues (donated to the community by local businesswomen in 1940), you step onto streets lined with global bistros, late-night dessert cafés, thrift shops, and the arthouse Landmark Cinema.
Hillcrest is also famous for its historic pedestrian bridges spanning deep eucalyptus canyons. Walk five minutes south to First Avenue and Redwood Street to cross the 1912 Quince Street Bridge (a wooden trestle footbridge over Maple Canyon) and the sweeping 1905 Spruce Street Suspension Bridge, a swaying steel wire pedestrian bridge suspended seventy feet above a leafy ravine that leads straight toward Bankers Hill and Balboa Park. On Sunday mornings, Normal Street (at Lincoln Avenue) hosts the massive Hillcrest Farmers Market, drawing well over a hundred farm and international street-food stalls. MTS Rapid Bus Route 215 and Route 7 connect both neighborhoods directly with downtown and Balboa Park.
