Best Time to Visit Tunis

Spring wildflowers at Carthage, warm October swimming, summer jasmines and mild museum winters.

Enjoying a classic Mediterranean climate moderated by the Gulf of Tunis, the capital is rewarding year-round, but the sweet spots for combining outdoor archaeological walks at Carthage with rooftop lunches in the Medina are April to mid-June and September to November.

Spring (April to June) is arguably the finest season in northern Tunisia. Daytime highs climb from 22°C in April to around 29°C by early June, with long sunny days and cool evenings. Wild poppies, yellow daisies and flowering acacias carpet the hillside ruins of Carthage Byrsa and the Antonine Baths, while orange blossom scents the courtyards of Sidi Bou Said and the Cap Bon peninsula. Crowds at the Bardo National Museum are light and walking through the Medina souks is effortless.

Summer (July and August) brings hot, dry, cloudless afternoons averaging 33°C to 35°C (and occasionally higher when the southern sirocco / chili wind blows up from the Sahara). If you visit in midsummer, adopt the local rhythm: tour the shaded stone alleys of the Medina or air-conditioned museum halls in the morning, rest or swim at La Marsa and Gammarth in the afternoon, and head up to Sidi Bou Said at dusk when street vendors sell tiny hand-tied bouquets of fragrant white jasmine (machmoum) and families fill the seaside terraces.

Autumn (September to November) starts warm enough for Mediterranean swimming in September and October (25°C to 30°C), when the sea has stored all of summer's heat and fresh dates and pomegranates pile up on stalls inside the Marché Central. November cools to a pleasant 21°C and often hosts the historic Carthage Film Festival (JCC) in cinemas along Avenue Habib Bourguiba.

Winter (December to March) is mild and green (16°C to 19°C by day, 8°C to 10°C at night) with occasional rain showers (6 to 7 wet days a month). It is the peak season for watching thousands of greater flamingos wintering in the shallow waters of Lake Tunis and Sejoumi Lagoon. Check what to wear in Tunis before packing.
