What to Wear in Tunis
What to wear from the traditional alleys of the Medina to the breezy coastal hills of Sidi Bou Said.
Tunis is a cosmopolitan Mediterranean capital where styles shift gently from traditional to modern as you move from the historic core out to the seafront suburbs. Packing light, breathable fabrics alongside grippy walking shoes and a simple cover-up lets you move smoothly between ancient ruins, 17th-century religious colleges and lively coastal bistros.
Footwear and seasonal layers
- Non-slip walking shoes or cushioned trainers: the main cobbled spine of Sidi Bou Said is polished smooth by generations of footsteps and climbs steeply from the TGM station to the lighthouse, while the flagstone lanes of the Medina and the uneven stone paths of Carthage demand proper grip. Avoid slick leather soles and high heels for daytime sightseeing.
- Breathable linen and cotton for April to October, plus a sun hat: the archaeological sites of Carthage (especially the Antonine Baths, the Tophet and Byrsa Hill) have wide stretches of open stone with limited shade, so bring sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat alongside light trousers, skirts or loose shirts.
- A light jacket or wool jumper from November to March: winter days in Tunis are often bright and mild, but evenings drop below 10°C and thick-walled courtyard dars and tiled palaces can feel cool indoors; pack a rain-resistant jacket and warm layers.
Medina etiquette, mosques and coastal suburbs
In Centre Ville, La Goulette, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa, locals dress much like in southern Europe, in smart jeans, summer dresses, linen shirts and tailored jackets. When exploring the older residential quarters of the Medina or visiting the exterior courtyard viewing gallery of the Zitouna Mosque and the royal mausoleum of Tourbet el-Bey, dressing slightly more conservatively by covering shoulders and knees shows respect and draws a warm welcome from shopkeepers and caretakers; women may also wish to carry a light scarf in their daybag. Inside the Bardo National Museum, air conditioning can feel brisk after the outdoor heat. Check seasonal weather in Tunis before you travel.
