Analakely Market, Avenue de l'Indépendance and Lake Anosy
Red-brick colonial arcades, Soarano Railway Station, Analakely Market pavilions and Lake Anosy.
If Haute-Ville represents the quiet royal citadel of Antananarivo, the valley floor of Analakely and Avenue de l'Indépendance is its beating commercial heart. Cradled between two steep hillside ridges, this wide central boulevard was laid out in the early 20th century over drained marshland and formerly hosted the famous Zoma (Friday) open-air market, once considered one of the largest street markets in the world.
Gare de Soarano and the red-brick arcades of Avenue de l'Indépendance
Begin at the northern head of the boulevard outside the Gare de Soarano, the handsome 1910 central railway station built to terminate the mountain railway climbing up from the Indian Ocean port of Toamasina. Today its restored stone hall houses clean artisan boutiques, bookshops and exhibition spaces. Stretching south from the station facade, Avenue de l'Indépendance (Araben'ny Fahaleovantena) runs straight toward the modern Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) between uniform rows of two-storey red-brick buildings shaded by deep arched colonnades. Wide central garden beds planted with palms and flowering shrubs separate the traffic lanes, while steep stone staircases climb both flanks of the valley toward Antaninarenina on the east and Ambondrona on the west.
Navigating Analakely Market and the Ambondrona stairs
Just east and south of the City Hall gardens spreads the permanent pavilion network of Analakely Market. Rather than a chaotic jumble, the market is organised into distinct zones under white parasols and stone roofs:
- Spices, vanilla and wild pepper: fragrant bundles of cured Bourbon vanilla pods from the Sava region, pungent red and black voatsiperifery wild forest pepper, cinnamon bark, cloves and jars of pink peppercorns.
- Woven raffia, straw hats and textiles: stacks of wide-brimmed highland sunhats, market baskets, colourful printed lambahoany cotton wraps and hand-stitched leather goods.
- Highland produce and flower stalls: pyramids of lychees (in late spring), persimmons, small sweet highland pineapples, watercress and bundles of fresh brèdes greens destined for evening romazava pots.
Ambohijatovo Tunnel and heart-shaped Lake Anosy
From the southern end of Analakely, walk through the brick-vaulted 1920s road tunnel pierced straight under Ambohijatovo ridge to emerge beside Lake Anosy. Created in the 1830s by Scottish artisan James Cameron on the orders of King Radama I to power hydraulics and gunpowder workshops, the artificial lake is shaped like a heart and linked by a narrow causeway to a central island crowned by the winged bronze Ange Noir war memorial. In October and November, the ring of mature jacaranda trees around the water turns intense purple, framing the silhouette of the Rova high on the cliff above. Pair your market walk with Ambohimanga and highland dishes.
