What to Wear in Antananarivo

Grippy footwear for steep stone staircases, warm layers for 1,400-metre nights and respectful dress at royal sites.

Packing for Antananarivo requires thinking like a mountain traveller rather than an island beachgoer. At nearly 1,400 metres on the exposed upper ridges of Haute-Ville, the equatorial sun feels warm at midday, yet the temperature drops rapidly as soon as shadows lengthen over the western rice plains. Even if your wider Madagascar itinerary includes hot coastal stops like Nosy Be or Morondava, keep highland layers at the top of your bag for your days in the capital.

Footwear, highland layers and rain protection

  • Sturdy closed-toe walking shoes with rubber grip: the historic staircases linking Analakely and Antaninarenina to the upper town are built from worn granite blocks, and Haute-Ville's lanes are paved in uneven cobbles. Leave thin sandals and smooth soles in your suitcase; wear cushioned trainers or lightweight trail shoes.
  • A warm fleece, merino jumper or light down jacket (May to September): during the dry austral winter, mornings and evenings drop to around 10°C, and many charming heritage guesthouses have high timber ceilings without central heating. Dress in peelable layers: a breathable cotton T-shirt or linen shirt for midday sunshine, topped with a warm mid-layer and windproof shell for sunset drinks overlooking Lake Anosy.
  • A packable waterproof jacket and umbrella (November to April): during the austral summer, sunny mornings often turn into sudden afternoon cloudbursts that send rainwater rushing down the hillside gutters.

Respectful dress at royal hills and local style

Highland Malagasy culture places strong value on neat, modest presentation, particularly in churches, government quarters and ancestral monuments. Residents often wear a draped rectangular cloth called a lamba over their shoulders against the morning chill. When visiting the Rova of Antananarivo or the sacred Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, wear trousers, jeans or a knee-length skirt or dress rather than short beach shorts, and keep a scarf in your daypack. Bring a wide-brimmed sunhat, high-factor sunscreen and mosquito repellent for late afternoon walks around Lake Anosy or Parc Tsarasaotra. Check seasonal weather before you travel.
