Where to Stay in Antananarivo: Highland Ridges vs Valley
Choosing between panoramic heritage guesthouses in Haute-Ville, bistro-lined Isoraka and modern Ivandry.
Because valley traffic in Antananarivo can move slowly during morning and late-afternoon rush hours, choosing where to stay depends on the shape of your itinerary. If you have two or three days to explore the palaces, museums and markets, stay up on the historic central ridges; if you have an early-morning flight the next day, sleep on the northern side of town near the airport expressway.
Haute-Ville and Faravohitra (best for views, heritage and quiet nights)
Perched along the upper ridge between the Rova of Antananarivo, Andohalo Cathedral and the Faravohitra belvedere, the Upper Town is the most atmospheric part of the capital. Narrow cobbled streets wind between 19th-century red-brick aristocratic townhouses converted into intimate boutique hotels with timber verandas, open fireplaces and sunset terraces looking straight down onto Lake Anosy. Because through-traffic is sparse at the top of the ridge, nights are remarkably peaceful, and you can walk to the Rova, the Photography Museum and high-end French-Malagasy restaurants in ten minutes.
Isoraka and Antaninarenina (best central base for dining and walking)
Halfway down the western flank of the central ridge, Isoraka and neighbouring Antaninarenina sit in the Ville-Moyenne (Middle Town). Isoraka is Antananarivo's culinary hub, packing many of the city's finest bistros, chocolate boutiques, wine bars and mid-range hotels into a few walkable blocks. Just above it, shady Place d'Antaninarenina holds historic colonial hotels, reliable bank ATMs and the stone staircases descending directly into Analakely Market and Avenue de l'Indépendance. This is the most balanced base for first-time visitors who want restaurants outside their door.
Ankorondrano and Lake Anosy (full-service international hotels)
On the flatter valley floor beside Lake Anosy and north toward the commercial district of Ankorondrano, larger international hotels offer swimming pools, gyms, conference facilities and secure courtyard parking. You are well placed for quick departures south toward Lemurs' Park or east toward Andasibe, though you will want a taxi to climb up to Haute-Ville.
Ivandry and Tsarasaotra (best for short layovers and Ivato Airport)
Around six kilometres north of the historic centre near the shores of Lake Masay and the Parc Tsarasaotra bird sanctuary, Ivandry is a leafy diplomatic and residential quarter with contemporary boutique hotels, bakeries and garden cafés. Linked directly to Ivato International Airport via the Tsarasaotra bypass road in 15 to 20 minutes, Ivandry is the smartest choice if you arrive late in the evening or have an early domestic flight the next morning. Fit your hotel into our three-day Antananarivo itinerary.
