Arriving in Auckland: AKL Airport Transfers, Puhinui Train Link, AT Contactless & Ferries

How to travel from Auckland Airport (AKL) to the CBD: compare the SkyDrive express coach and the AirportLink + Puhinui train connection, navigate International and Domestic terminals, and use contactless payment on AT buses, trains, and ferries.

Almost all international travellers and long-haul flights enter New Zealand through Auckland Airport (IATA: AKL), situated at Māngere on the northern shore of Manukau Harbour, 21 kilometres south of the downtown waterfront. Understanding the terminal layout and your two main public transport links makes arrival straightforward.

1. Navigating Auckland Airport (AKL) & Reaching Central Auckland

  • Connecting Between the International and Domestic Terminals: AKL operates two separate terminal buildings roughly 900 metres apart. If transferring onto a domestic Air New Zealand or Jetstar flight to Queenstown, Christchurch, or Wellington, either follow the signposted outdoor covered Green Line Walkway (12 to 15 minutes on foot) with your trolley or board the free orange Terminal Transfer Bus departing every 15 minutes from outside both terminals.
  • Option A, SkyDrive Express Coach (skydrive.co.nz, 40 to 45 Minutes): The most direct non-stop coach departs every 30 minutes from both the International Terminal (Stop B) and Domestic Terminal and drops passengers right behind the Sky Tower on Federal Street in the heart of the CBD.
  • Option B, AirportLink Bus + Train via Puhinui Station (40 Minutes): For the fastest rail-connected public transit route (bypassing motorway rush-hour congestion), board the electric orange AirportLink bus outside either terminal; it runs every 10 minutes along dedicated bus lanes to the architectural Puhinui Station interchange (10 to 12 minutes), where frequent Southern and Eastern Line trains carry you straight into Waitematā Station (Britomart) on the downtown waterfront in around 28 minutes.

2. Contactless Tap Payments on AT Transit & Downtown Ferry Terminal Piers

  • Tap and Go with Contactless Bank Cards (at.govt.nz): You no longer need to buy a physical transit card for short stays: all Auckland Transport (AT) buses (including the bright-red electric CityLink bus running up Queen Street to Karangahape Road and Wynyard Quarter, and the green InnerLink loop), suburban trains, and inner-harbour ferries accept contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay at the gate readers alongside the rechargeable AT HOP card.
  • Downtown Ferry Terminal (Quay Street): Directly across the plaza from Waitematā Station stands the 1912 Edwardian Ferry Building and its modern glass piers, where Fullers360 and AT ferries depart for Devonport (12 minutes), Rangitoto Island (25 minutes), and Waiheke Island (40 minutes).
